Moore Named Football League Young POTM

A boyhood Leicester fan, Moore has progressed through the Foxes’ Academy and, following a loan spell at Bradford City, made his debut for the club in January 2012.  This season has seen Moore step up a level, once again, with the 20-year-old defender cementing his place at the heart of the Foxes defence.

September was a standout month for Moore.  Not just because of his assured performances at the back that helped Leicester remain unbeaten, but also because he scored his first career goal in the Sky Bet Championship match against Wigan Athletic.

In accepting the Award, Liam Moore said: “It is very nice. It is something I will be able to keep forever and it's an achievement. But if it’s personal success or team success then I will pick team success every day. But if they both come together then I couldn't be more grateful.”

His manager at Leicester City, Nigel Pearson added, “Liam has had a very good start to the season - and he did last year. As a young player he has developed very well. He has worked exceptionally hard. He is playing alongside experienced players and experienced players can sometimes be the best coaches. It's great for him to pick up an award as an individual but he would be the first to recognise that to win awards like that you have to be part of an effective team and he has contributed very well so far.”

Each season, Football League clubs invest more than £60m on identifying, training and educating the next generation of football talent. There are more than 8,000 young players registered with League clubs making Football League Youth Development the largest centrally co-ordinated young player programme in world football.  In the 2013/14 season to date, 89 players aged 21 or under have made their professional debuts for Football League clubs.

David Wetherall, Head of Youth Development at The Football League, said, “Liam has had a great start to the season and looks to be establishing an impressive defensive partnership with Wes Morgan.  Scoring a first career goal for the club he supports will certainly make it a month he remembers, and one I look forward to seeing him build upon”.

Each month the accolade will be awarded by The Football League to the young player who has made the most significant contribution and impact in first team football. To be eligible the player must be either under 21 years of age or be playing in the season during which he turns 21.  Currently a third of all players registered with Football League clubs are eligible to be considered for this award.
