Albrighton Proud Of Historic Goal

- Albrighton says his side’s focus immediately turns to Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley 

Leicester City midfielder Marc Albrighton says scoring the Club’s first ever UEFA Champions League goal was a proud moment for himself and his family. 

It took just five minutes for the Foxes to open the scoring in what proved to be a ruthless and determined performance against Belgian champions Club Brugge. 

Albrighton’s instinctive finish was followed up by a Riyad Mahrez brace, as Claudio Ranieri guided his men to a stunning 3-0 victory on their Champions League debut. 

Reflecting on his goal, Albrighton told LCFC TV: “It’s massive. I’m not going to play it down because it’s probably one of the biggest achievements of my career so far. It’s massive for me and my family because it will live with me forever. 

“I can always look back and say I’ve done that and hopefully with a few more games left in the competition, I can chip in with a few more. 

“I just thought don’t miss! It’s all a bit of a blur. Obviously it happened so fast during the game and I think the celebration needs a bit of work because it doesn’t happen too often. 

“It was a bit rusty, but as far as the goal goes, it was just instinct to put it in the net and to do it in such a prestigious competition at such an important time of the game was fantastic for us and the team. 

“Just to be there is sensational and to score is just that one better. For everything that my family have done for me and supported me throughout, it’s massive for me, but it’s massive for them as well. It’s something that I’m sure they’re all proud.” 

While the Foxes started positively, just before Albrighton’s strike came a chance for Brugge forward Jose Izquierdo, who broke the offside trap, but couldn’t direct his effort on target while one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel. 

“We felt like we started well and they got through with a good through-ball,” said Albrighton. “Fortunately, they put that wide and that probably woke us up a little bit to switch on a little more. 

“To get an early goal is good in any game and it’s something to grasp onto. We managed to open the game up a little bit and get a few more goals.” 

The result will live long in the memory of all involved with Leicester City after they burst onto the Champions League scene with a brilliant win, but focus for Albrighton and his men now turns to Saturday’s Premier League visit of Burnley to King Power Stadium. 

He added: “This has gone now. It’s been nice to enjoy it but it’s gone now. We’ll have a meeting about Burnley now and we’ve got to get our heads switched on to them. 

“We’ll have no problem focusing on that. We know that’s our bread and butter. We need to concentrate on our league form and get some wins there and that’s where it matters. Hopefully we can pick something up at the weekend, carry this form into the league and do a good job there.”
