Drinkwater: Keep Pushing On

Danny Drinkwater is confident that Leicester City’s upward momentum can continue following a 2-0 win, over Sunderland, on Tuesday night. 

The Foxes climbed into the upper half of the table for the first time since early September with a hard-fought 2-0 success over the Black Cats at King Power Stadium, their sixth in a row in all competitions, courtesy of second half strikes by Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy.

Drinkwater impressed again alongside Wilfred Ndidi in the centre for City but Craig Shakespeare’s men had to remain patient in their endeavours to find an opener with substitute Marc Albrighton providing two assists in nine minutes to help settle an occasionally strained affair on Filbert Way. 

Speaking to LCFC TV at full-time, England international Drinkwater said: “The three points at the end of it is the only thing that matters. It was possibly a frustrating first half but, in the second half, we were patient and we dominated enough to get the three points in the end. 

“Sunderland are in their own battle and we’re trying to carry on our run of form to climb higher up the table. We knew it was going to be a tough game but we got the result and we’re happy at the full-time whistle. 

“It’s about being patient, doing what we can, and finding what it takes to win on the pitch. Week in, week out, we’ve got players who can come in and contribute which is a part of our game. The more players that can come on and do that, the better.” 

The result sees City up to tenth in the Premier League standings with eight matches to play and Drinkwater insists that anything is possible between now and the end of the season ahead of a hectic April fixture schedule. 

“I think that’s where we deserve to be. If you look at the last two months, how we’ve risen, it’s a big compliment to the squad, to the staff. It’s where we belong and we’ll keep pushing on. 

“April is a busy month, we’ve got the Champions League as well which is exciting, but we’ll keep going and hopefully we’ll keep picking up the points like we do.”
