Danny Simpson knows Leicester City cannot afford to “take their foot off the gas” on the back of their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions with another six matches yet to play in April.

Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy scored for the Foxes as at King Power Stadium meaning Craig Shakespeare’s men, who temporarily climbed into the top half, go into this weekend’s trip to Everton in sparkling form.

Right-back Simpson expected the Black Cats to pose problems for City and, for 60 minutes, that proved to be the case but the introduction of Slimani and Marc Albrighton changed the match, giving the hosts fresh impetus in attacking positions in the latter stages.

“We knew Sunderland were going to come here and make it difficult for us in the position they’re in,” Simpson told LCFC TV. “It was a little bit sloppy but we regrouped. The boss said keep going and make sure we don’t concede and we did that.

“We’ve been there before, we know exactly what it’s like. It was a tough game and I think the fans got a little anxious. But we knew if we kept going we’d get a chance and we would score. That’s why we’ve got a squad, Islam and Marc came on and changed the game.

If you give Islam that kind of service he’ll at least make the 'keeper work and the second goal was a great finish by Jamie. The whole 11 were working and defending as a group. We’ve got that edge again to make sure we don’t concede. We’ve got some luck again as well.

Simpson revealed the whole camp are buoyed by their form and says there is no reason why it can’t continue despite the opposition which are yet to come. The 30-year-old right-back added: “It’s a great run. We know we can’t take our foot off the gas. We’ve got to keep going.

"A tough away game next and then the Champions League. We’re in good form, the camp is buzzing and we just want to keep this run going.”
