Leicester City’s performance against Burnley oozed quality and maturity, according to defender Danny Simpson.
After a midweek win over Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League, many were eager to see how the Foxes would respond, as they resumed their Premier League campaign against the Clarets.
It proved to be a thoroughly professional display and a truly memorable league debut for Islam Slimani, who bagged a brace in his first appearance at King Power Stadium.
“I think it was a really mature performance from the boys, especially from midweek travelling to Belgium,” Simpson told LCFC TV. “We started the game well.
“We know Burnley have just come up so they’re going to give everything they’ve got. In the first half we were solid and the more the game went on, the more our quality showed.
“I think it shows to everyone how far we’ve come. It’s credit to the players and staff behind the scenes with all the travelling and recovery and the right kind of training.
“It’s about managing us right and I think that we’ve shown that, even the lads that played on Wednesday, we’re in good form and good shape. It’s a learning curve for everyone but I think it’s worked really well this week.”
A goal on the stroke of half-time and a second just two minutes after the break from Slimani put City 2-0 up, before former Fox Ben Mee turned Riyad Mahrez’s low cross into the back of his own net for 3-0.
Simpson added: “The timing [of Slimani’s goals] was everything, especially before half-time and straight again after half-time. It’s what you need, especially at home.
“It’s great for Islam to get his first goals for the Club and especially at home for the fans to see what he can do. That’ll give him a boost. I think overall the performance was perfect.
“He’s slotted in well. It’s obviously good for him that Riyad is here. He obviously knows him from the Algeria national team so he knows him really well.
“He’s integrated really well with everyone and the type of player he is is that he works his socks off. He’s what we’re all about in training and games, so it’s been easy for him to slot in.”
