Maddison Scores, Pașcanu’s Romania Qualify For Semi-Finals

James Maddison’s well-executed finish helped England Under-21s round off their UEFA U21 European Championship campaign with a 3-3 draw with Croatia, while Alex Pașcanu’s Romania Under-21s booked their spot in the semi-finals on Monday night.

In a thrilling encounter in Serravalle, Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson put England ahead at the San Marino Stadium, before while Josip Brekalo levelled matters on 39 minutes.

Aidy Boothroyd’s men were unfortunate not to regain the lead when Demarai Gray saw a strike cleared off the line after a neat pass from Maddison.

Demarai Gray saw a strike cleared off the line just before the interval.

It was, in fact, the City No.10 who put England back in front, only for Nikola Vlašić to equalise after the hour mark.

A stunner from Everton full-back Jonjoe Kenny appeared to have won the game for the Young Lions, but Brekalo was again on target eight minutes from time to secure a draw for the Croatians.

Filip Benković and Harvey Barnes were unused substitutes in the draw, as both Croatia and England concluded their U21 EURO journeys.

In the same group, Development Squad defender Pașcanu, who was also an unused substitute, saw his Romania Under-21s side qualify for the semi-finals after a goalless draw with France in Cesena.

Pașcanu, who played 90 minutes in the convincing wins over Croatia and France, could feature for his nation during an exciting last-four clash with Group B winners Germany on Thursday 27 June.

The result also means that Romania Under-21s have qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

The next Fox in international action could be Wilfred Ndidi, who will aim to build on his Man of the Match performance against Burundi when Nigeria tackle Guinea in the Africa Cup of Nations Finals on Wednesday afternoon.
