Remembering When Maguire Made Leicester History At A World Cup
The centre-back moved to King Power Stadium for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2017 and went on to make over 70 appearances for the Foxes across two seasons.
Shortly after he signed for the Football Club, he was selected by England manager Gareth Southgate for two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and then later made his debut for the Three Lions against Lithuania in October 2017.
After a maiden season at Leicester City, during which he scored on his home debut against Brighton & Hove Albion and also found the target late on against Manchester United, Maguire was once again selected for his nation – this time for the World Cup finals in Russia.
He became a pivotal part of the side that got through to the semi-finals of the competition, appearing in all of England’s fixtures, including a 2-0 success over Sweden in the quarter-finals in Samara.
Having won two of their three group games, England then faced Colombia in the last-16, where they won their first-ever FIFA World Cup penalty shootout to book a clash with the Swedes in Moscow.
It was during that game that he not only netted his first goal for England, but also wrote himself into Leicester City’s history books, as he became the first Fox to find the net at the World Cup for the Three Lions.
To add to Maguire’s personal achievements, it was also the first time since 1990 that England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, setting up a semi-final tie with Croatia.
Although Maguire and co. would ultimately exit the competition at the last-four stage, it proved to be a memorable tournament for the City star.
Upon his return to club duty later that year, he signed a new deal with the Football Club before departing for Manchester United for an undisclosed fee the following summer.
Later this evening, meanwhile, he could come up against former City team-mate Kasper Schmeichel when Denmark face England in the semi-finals of the UEFA 2020 European Championships.
