Maddison Exudes Confidence After Win To Nil At Burnley
- Leicester City beat Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor on Tuesday night in the Premier League
- Substitutes James Maddison and Jamie Vardy secured the points in Lancashire
-Maddison reflects on City’s first Premier League clean sheet since August
-He has now scored 12 goals in all competitions this season
The Foxes claimed three league points on the road for the first time since October thanks to the impact of two substitutes – Maddison and Jamie Vardy.
Maddison struck first – his 12th goal of the season in all competitions – before City’s No.9 added a second on his return from injury as Leicester beat Burnley 2-0 at Turf Moor.
“After the Randers game, we reiterated how important clean sheets are for confidence amongst the squad, so it’s brilliant to come here, to a tough place,” Maddison reflected.
“Everyone always says it, and they don’t say it for laughs and giggles – it’s a tough place to come and get a clean sheet as we’ve experienced before.
“A clean sheet here, three points, two goals from impact substitutions shows the squad we’ve got at the minute. So, it’s a really positive camp at the minute.
Maddison & Vardy Seal Late Burnley Triumph
Goals from James Maddison and Jamie Vardy secure all three Premier League points for the Foxes at Burnley.
“I think there’s a lot of positives tonight. I think we were the better team, we created the better chances. Nick Pope was brilliant today, [he made] some fantastic saves, unbelievable saves.
“But we can build on the performance, the performance is the main thing. The points are what gets you up the league, the goals, all that sort of stuff, comes from the base of the performance, and the performances have been better in recent weeks, and that’s why we won today.
“Hopefully, we can build on that, and put in better performances, because in the long run, sometimes you’ll have games like Wolves, where you play well and you don’t win, but more often than not, when you play well, you win. It’s pretty simple.”
Although City have not produced the away form they desire this term, Maddison believes their recent run of three wins from four games will provide them with a welcoming wave of confidence heading into the final three months of the campaign.
“In the main, before this little run, I think the two or three years prior, our away form was actually good,” he said. “It’s disappointing, because I feel like we’re always a threat on the road, but obviously the results speak for themselves.
I didn’t really feel I got closed down, and I’m just as comfortable off my left as I am my right, so I knew it was just about getting pace and guiding it into that far corner.

“It’s nice to get a win in the Premier League away from home, and a clean sheet away from home. The gaffer (Brendan Rodgers) said to us after then, it’s been a year since we had a clean sheet away from home.
“It’s brilliant to get that, to get the win for the fans who travelled and the people who watched at home. It’s something to build on, a great performance, and the foundations to build on now.”
Now with three strikes in his last two appearances, Maddison is producing the best goals return of his Leicester career. Talking through his opener in Lancashire, he said: “I just found myself in that pocket of space outside the box, which I love to be in. Vards did really well to stay onside, and then to get the ball under control and lay it off for me.
“I didn’t really feel I got closed down, and I’m just as comfortable off my left as I am my right, so I knew it was just about getting pace and guiding it into that far corner.
“To be fair, with the form Popey was in, I was probably expecting him to tip that around the post, but it had enough pace and it was right in the corner, so I’m really happy with that. And Vards, again, back on the scoresheet, doing what he does – I don’t need to talk about that!”
