Bruno Fernandes' penalty was added to by a late effort from Jesse Lingard at King Power Stadium in a result which confirmed City's fifth-placed finish in the Premier League this term.
While the Foxes will understandably be disappointed not to finish in the top four, Taggart, Walsh and Roberts pointed to Leicester's bright future and Jamie Vardy's Golden Boot win in their analysis.
Pre-season goal achieved
Gerry Taggart said: “It’s probably not the best time in the world to try and explain it, but it’s a massive disappointment for everyone concerned. Manchester United pulled it off and we’re in the Europa League. That was the goal at the beginning of the season. They’ve broken into the top-six.”
A great effort
Steve Walsh said: “They maybe deserved more in the game and they had the opportunities. The game changes if you score one of them. It’s been a great effort over the season. There’s so many plus points. It’s always a roller-coaster ride with Leicester City. It’s going to be fun in the Europa League, I think we all know that!”
Adding context
Iwan Roberts said: “They’ve had injuries to key players. One of the best right-backs in the Premier League, a brilliant centre-back, the England left-back, the most creative midfielder… it’s going to hurt any team. They came so, so close to qualifying for the Champions League, but it wasn’t to be. It’s unfortunate, but they’ll come back from this. There’s years and years in this team.”
A learning curve for City
Gerry Taggart said: “There is so much experience to be gained from this lockdown period. It has been a strange time for everybody over this period and they’ll have learned from it. I feel we’ll see that swashbuckling Leicester City we did earlier on in the season again next year. Once everybody's back in the team and Brendan [Rodgers] has added some more quality, they'll be back to their best.”
Vardy's Golden Boot
Steve Walsh said: “I’m so happy for Jamie to get the Golden Boot. It’s a reminder of how good both he and Leicester have been this season for the most part. He really does deserve it and don’t forget, he’s beaten some special players to win that award. He’s a top-quality player and he seems to be getting better with age at the Club.”
A marvellous achievement
Iwan Roberts said: “It’s a marvellous achievement. It was 23 goals in 35 games, his record. Believe me, as a striker, that is a great record. He’s done it the hard way in his career, but he’s a top, top striker. He’s been right at the very top of his game this season and you can see that by him scoring more than any other player in the Premier League.”
