Wes Morgan believes Leicester City competed well with Arsenal during Wednesday's Carabao Cup Third Round tie and were unfortunate to concede the goals they did in a 2-0 defeat at King Power Stadium.

Christian Fuchs' own goal came after a first half which witnessed James Maddison hit the post for the Foxes, while Eddie Nketiah scored the Gunners' second of the night in added time.

It means City exit the competition at the third round stage, but Club captain Morgan, making his first start of 2020/21, says Leicester were unlucky in defeat on Filbert Way.

"I thought we competed very well for most of the game," the 36-year-old centre-back told LCFC TV at full-time. "[It was] pretty even through the first half, I'd say.

"We had a couple of chances, Madders (Maddison) had a great strike at the goal [which] come off the post, so yes, pretty even in the first half.

"Then [in the] second half, [it was] pretty much the same. You know, I think we were probably unlucky to concede the type of goals we did.

"It just dropped for them and, obviously, they made the most of the opportunities, but I think overall, you know, we could be satisfied with the performance.

"[We had] a lot of new players playing today; Daniel Amartey, it's first time he's played in two years... it's fantastic that he got through 90 minutes.

"It was good to get out there, get some minutes. I've only played 30 minutes in the pre-season games so to get 90 under the belt felt good.

"Then, some young players played in the game today, which was good to see. So, overall, an okay performance [but we're] disappointed not to come away with the win."

Morgan was pleased to see Maddison make his first start since 23 June - a draw with Brighton & Hove Albion during the elongated 2019/20 campaign.

"He's one of our key players," the 2016 title-winner added. "I know he's struggled with injuries and we tried to get him involved last season after restart.

"He's had his operation, he's been training hard, training for weeks, and he's steadily reintroduced himself back into the team, you know.

"So, I know he's in contention and once he's up to full-match speed, I'm sure he'll be involved and making things tick for us."

Leicester's Premier League campaign continues on Sunday, following successive victories, with a trip to face Manchester City at Etihad Stadium on Sunday (4:30pm BST kick-off).

Morgan says work will begin in earnest to prepare for that clash with Pep Guardiola's men and revealed the Foxes are determined to continue their high performance levels in the league.

"Obviously we've had a great start so far to the season, two wins," he continued. "You can't ask for much more than that.

"Obviously, we're going to Man City in the next game and we know that's not going to be an easy task.

"But the boys have showed great form and we need to continue that and we're feeling confident, so we'll see what happens."
