Foxes midfielder Littlejohn started the game at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, a 3-1 reverse, making her 59th senior international appearance in the process.

The two-time world champions took an early two-goal lead courtesy of first half strikes from Lina Magull and Tabea Waßmuth before Ireland hit back, halving the deficit via Katie McCabe's penalty on the cusp of half-time.

But as the hosts pushed for an equaliser late on, Waßmuth scored again to end Irish hopes of securing a play-off spot and reaching the UEFA Women's European Championships.

Ireland finished their qualification campaign in third place, on 13 points from eight outings, missing out on the play-offs by two points.

Sophie Howard consoles teammate Erin Cuthbert at the full-time whistle, after Scotland missed out on qualification.

Elsewhere, City defender Sophie Howard was an unused substitute in Scotland's 1-0 defeat to Finland at Easter Road. A stoppage time winner from the visitors means the Scots cannot qualify for the July 2022 tournament.

Amanda Rantanen's 95th-minute goal moved Finland to the top of Group E, on 16 points, with Scotland - who are in third place on nine points - unable to catch them or Portugal, with two games remaining.
