The second-placed Foxes were dominant for large spells in south London, with Kelechi Iheanacho being denied from the penalty spot, as several chances went awry in the first half.
Despite delivering a confident performance, after making seven changes to the starting XI due to fixture congestion, City in fact fell behind in the 58th minute as Wilfried Zaha struck from close range.
Leicester rallied, however, and with just seven minutes of normal time to be played, the visitors were on level terms through a perfectly-placed low drive from in-form Harvey Barnes.
Opportunities to register a last-gasp 10th league victory of the season came and went for Rodgers' men in the capital, but the Northern Irishman was nonetheless pleased with his side's resolve.
"Over the course of the 90 minutes, we should have won the game," he admitted, speaking to LCFC TV at full-time. "We dominated the first half and had chances in the first half to go in front.
"If you can do that in these games, especially when the schedule’s so tight, it gives you a real foothold in the game. We didn’t start the second well. Once we went behind, our reaction was better.
"We brought Youri [Tielemans] into the game, who then can make our passes, and then for the last 25 minutes to half-an-hour, we were excellent. It’s just unfortunate we couldn’t go on and win it."
Barnes' 83rd-minute effort represents his eighth goal in all competitions this season, one more than his overall 2019/20 tally, and Rodgers has been pleased with his progress this term.
While picking out the Academy graduate for his development, the former Liverpool and Celtic manager also discussed City's next outing, a trip to Newcastle United on Sunday 3 January (2:15pm GMT kick-off).
"It’s the area of the game we said he needed to improve on and he’s working so hard," Rodgers added. "He’s doing extra training and working on his shooting. Off his weaker foot, it was a fantastic strike.
"We can recover now and get some of the players who have played two games in three days [some rest], but we can recover well and get ready for Newcastle."
