- Youri Tielemans is named Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season in Leicester City’s 2020/21 Annual End of Season Awards
- The Belgium international topped the Club’s fans and his team-mates’ voting charts
- He has scored nine goals for City this term, including a sensational winner in the Emirates FA Cup Final
- Tielemans could make his 60th appearance for club and country in 2020/21 against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday
The public vote saw the Belgium international earn plaudits from City’s supporters, while he was also named Players’ Player of the Season after without doubt his finest campaign in Leicester colours.
With voting for the Player of the Season accolade closing just a day after he fired home a barely believable winning goal in the Emirates FA Cup Final against Chelsea, his stunner perhaps deeper etched his name into the 2020/21 award.
However, his efforts throughout the term, which to date has seen him score nine times in all competitions for Leicester, were no doubt reflected at the End of the Season Awards given his peers also voted in the same manner.
“To win awards and individual awards are a reflection of your season,” he told LCFC TV. “It means that I’ve done well this season, and I’m really happy with it, so yes – I’m really grateful for the people voting for me.
“I hope I’ve helped them enjoy it even though the season was very strange and we didn’t have the fans with us inside the stadiums. I hope I’ve played well, and winning these awards mean a lot to me.
“When I came here, I knew that we had a really good team and a good group of players. I think this season, winning the FA Cup means a lot to us.
“It means that we’ve done well. We’ve worked really hard since we’ve been together and hopefully, we can carry on in that manner.”
With so many brilliant individual performances in 2020/21, Tielemans was honoured to be named Player of the Season by the Foxes faithful, some of whom will be able to show their appreciation on Sunday, when a number return to King Power Stadium for the first time since March 2020.
“I’m really happy and grateful for this,” he said of his awards. “It means a lot to me to win this award from the fans but also from the players, because we are together all season, and to be appreciated by the players for a player is important.
“Being appreciated by the fans as well is even better.”
Tielemans’ best goalscoring return for City, coupled with a mammoth 59 appearances for club and country across all formats this season, has seen him contribute significantly throughout the campaign.
He said: “You always want to score goals. Especially as a midfielder and box-to-box player like me, I like to get into the box or be in and around the box to try and score goals.
“This season, I’ve been even more productive than previous seasons. I’m really happy with this, and to help the team in that manner makes it even better.”
And while Kelechi Iheanacho’s attempt versus Crystal Palace won City’s Goal of the Season, courtesy of the Blue Army’s voting, Tielemans could have even had a third award after his rocket at Wembley Stadium helped the Foxes lift the FA Cup for the first time in their 137-year history.
“Yes, maybe!” he joked when asked whether he’d have been in the running for the Goal of the Season prize. “I think we should review that! But no, I’m really happy with that goal. I know it’s going to stay up there for a long, long time.
“I’m really happy to lift the cup afterwards. That’s the most important thing, you can score many nice goals, but if you don’t win anything, it doesn’t mean anything. But to be the guy who scored that goal, and to lift the cup afterwards means a lot.
“It was a very special and nice moment. Hopefully we can have some other beautiful moments like that.”
