- Leicester City secured a 1-0 win over Wolves at King Power Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday
- Jamie Vardy's first-half strike got the Foxes off to the best possible start in the 2021/22 campaign
- City's No.9 was keen to praise his defensive colleagues for seeing out the clean sheet
- The 34-year-old believes that resilience bodes well for the upcoming season
The FA Cup and Community Shield holders started brightly on Filbert Way, with Vardy expertly getting onto the end of Ricardo Pereira's excellent cross, after skilful play from the Portuguese on the right, but they needed to show different qualities in the latter moments.
Wolves went close on several occasions in the second half and were frustrated by a resolute defensive performance from Brendan Rodgers' men, with last-ditch blocks and interventions coming to typify the display from the home side on Saturday.
City's all-time top Premier League goalscorer was thrilled to get up and running for the new campaign, his eighth in the Premier League, but was keen to redirect the praise towards his team-mates when speaking to LCFC TV at full-time.
"You want to score in every single game, but it doesn't always happen," he said. "Obviously, to get onto the scoresheet today, I'm over the moon. It was excellent play from Ricky down the wing and, as a striker, you know you need to get across that near-post man and I've managed to do that.
"I got my toe on it and it's gone past the 'keeper, so I'm delighted with that, but seeing the lads defending as a team and doing everything possible to stop them from scoring, it's a really good sign. It's big. We came into it with confidence after winning the Community Shield, but we know it's different.
"It's the Premier League, so to get the three points, especially with the defending, we can't ask for any more and we'll look forward to next week now. We want to win every game and we know that if we're on our best performances, it might not always happen, but it gets the confidence going.
"It's all about consistency and we'll take that into next week."
Elaborating further on Leicester's defensive efforts, Vardy, 34, believes the nature of their determined performance later on will bode well for the Foxes ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
"I think, in the first half, we were very good," Leicester's No.9 added. "We were creating chances and then, in the second half, we've probably not come out as well as we know we can and Wolves have come into it, but but it shows how resolutely we defended.
"The lads put their bodies on the line to get blocks in so that shows what the clean sheet meant to us and I think it puts us in good stead for the rest of the season. It shows how resilient we are in wanting to keep those clean sheets. It's a big part of the game.
"We know we're going to get chances at the other end and it's about putting those away, but knowing we can defend like that and stop the chances going in in our end puts us in good stead for the season.
"We're not a team that just sticks to one formation. We work on loads of different things on the training pitch with the gaffer and I think everyone's been drilled into that perfectly now. It doesn't matter if we need to change during the game. Everyone knows what the job is."
