- The depth and quality in the squad this season is 'fantastic', he adds
With just under a week to go until the Foxes’ maiden top-flight campaign gets underway against Aston Villa on Saturday 4 September, excitement and anticipation is building within the camp.
City concluded their groundwork ahead of 2021/22 by facing Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season encounter at Belvoir Drive on Sunday, which Morgan described as an important learning exercise.
Although friendlies against Chelsea, Birmingham City and Liverpool have been a good measure to see where the squad is at, he admits that nothing can replicate the competitive fixtures to come.
LCFC Women’s manager commented to LCFC.com: “I’ve said to the girls that this is the WSL and we need to make sure that our quality is high at all times, but most importantly, our mentality needs to be on point.
“We’ve had so many learning curves over pre-season. In every game, you learn something new. I think today is a nice learning curve just before the season starts because we have played well over pre-season, we have trained very well.
“I’m pretty sure when we start the season next week against Villa and it’s competitive, I’m sure we’ll see a different side to the girls.
“We played teams in the WSL, a couple in the league below and while we’ve not been perfect in every game, it’s highlighted our issues, which is what we wanted, that’s what pre-season is for.
“And we’ve been able to focus on some of our strengths, but overall, we’re delighted and we’re excited to start next week against Villa.”
Midfielder Connie Scofield, recruited by the Club earlier this month, made her first appearance in a Leicester City shirt and Morgan was thrilled to see her get some minutes on the pitch.
Speaking more generally about the whole squad, he added that competition for places is driving up quality in all areas of the pitch, while the understanding between team-mates is increasing with every game.
Morgan explained: “It was good, we’ve been rehabbing Connie [Scofield] and she’s worked very hard, so that was a special moment for her.
“It’s great to get her back out there and we’re just looking forward to getting her back to full fitness, so she can start to stake a claim for a place in the team.
“The depth is fantastic, the quality is fantastic this season. I think we’ve got a good base to at least consolidate ourselves in the WSL for this season. The only thing that will ever let us down is our own mentality and that’s something we always need to keep working on.”
