Brendan Rodgers wants to see a reaction from Leicester City's players in Thursday's trip to Anfield to face Liverpool in the Premier League.

The Foxes were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup, as holders, by East Midlands neighbours Nottingham Forest on Sunday and return to Premier League duties with the challenge of facing Jürgen Klopp's Reds at Anfield

Speaking on Wednesday, Rodgers called that reverse in Nottingham a 'huge' disappointment and is now calling on his players to deliver a much-improved performance on Merseyside.

"Firstly, like it always is when you lose a game a football, whatever the context, the responsibility is always the manager’s," the Northern Irishman began. "I pick the tactics, I pick the team, of the players who are available, and when you lose a game, that’s my responsibility.

"What is also important and what I was saying after the game is there’s an accountability with players. For our levels, we didn’t perform and we lost the game, deservingly so. This is what football brings, that opportunity to show your resilience as an individual player and as a team.

"That is something which, for us this season, has been inconsistent. We’ve had some excellent results, but we haven’t delivered that consistency. Also, at the weekend, with it being a derby game, the first game of this type for such a long time, it was a huge disappointment, for me, for the supporters.

The Leicester City manager will be watching to see how his players respond to Sunday's reverse.

"I’ve had enough derby games and high-profile games to understand and get a sense of what they really mean for the supporters. They’d have turned up there at the weekend in the real hope that they could see their team get through as the defending champions of the cup in a big game.

"They saw their team play to a level which we would not want. You can’t shy away from that. I’ll always look after players, support players, protect players, but there’s also an accountability with players. That is something that this squad of players have always looked to do – to have that resilience to bounce back and enjoy it. That’s what football brings, the chance to demonstrate your mentality and your resilience as an individual and as a team."

City, who also have UEFA Europa Conference League football on the horizon, are now intent on climbing the Premier League standings, says Rodgers. The Foxes defeated Liverpool in the reverse fixture at King Power Stadium in December – Liverpool's last defeat in any competition.

"We want to finish as high as we possibly can in the league," he added. "We’re still in a cup competition and we want to go as far as we possibly can in that. I hope we can get players back and show our true level at some point before the end of the season – not just the true level but the consistency of it.

"That will be the aim. It's the toughest game you could have, probably, in the wake of a disappointing result, but as I said earlier, that’s what you have to enjoy as a player. Certainly, I’m looking forward to seeing our reaction.

The Foxes secured a hugely impressive win over Liverpool shortly after Christmas.

"We had an incredible result (vs. Liverpool in December) with spirit and quality when we played them on the back of playing Manchester City. I know that reaction is there. We need to dig deep over this next number of weeks and look to show that consistency and that hunger and that fight.

"Let’s see if we can get a result. It’s been a really reflective mood. It was hugely disappointing and sometimes, when you lose a game, you go away and you reflect and you can bounce back really quickly. I think this was a really disappointing performance as well as result. We will go again.

"We’ll galvanise the squad. It’s what you have to show in these moments. The biggest thing now is the reaction. You’re really looking at the performance as much as the result. You can lose a game of football and I’ve always said what never must be broken is your spirit.

"Normally, in football, you get the chance to go again. For us, we’ll look to take the spirit which we showed against Liverpool in our last game and bring that mentality into what will be a really tough game for us. That’s the challenge that you live for at this level, to show resilience and mentality to keep pushing."
