LCFC Women make their second trip of the season to Kingsmeadow on Saturday to face Chelsea in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup (1pm kick-off).

The fifth-round clash sees the Foxes take on the competition holders for a place in the quarter-finals of the prestigious tournament with both having already knocked out top-flight opposition to reach this stage for the third season running.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the pair's second meeting in the capital…

The Foxes camp

Nigerian international Ashleigh Plumptre celebrates her goal against West Ham United during City's last fixture.

A 3-1 comeback success over Tottenham Hotspur in round four was secured thanks to goals from Shannon O’Brien, Sophie Howard and Esmee De Graaf – the latter two arriving in extra-time after a late Foxes equaliser forced a further 30 minutes at The Hive Stadium.

League form has also picked up dramatically of late, with wins at Birmingham City and against West Ham United making it three consecutive victories across all competitions and lifting the team up to 10th in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

With several players returning from the international break shortly before Saturday’s game, manager Lydia Bedford could opt to rotate her squad, especially with one eye on their WSL trip to Manchester United the following Saturday.

The opposition

Millie Bright and Magdalena Eriksson lift the Vitality Women's FA Cup trophy aloft at Wembley Stadium.

A 3-0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium in December 2021 crowned Chelsea FA Cup winners for the third time – all three coming since 2015 and under the tutelage of Emma Hayes.

This season, meanwhile, the Blues saw off Aston Villa 3-1 at Banks’s Stadium thanks to a Guro Reiten double, either side of Pernille Harder’s penalty.

Chelsea have once again impressed in the Continental Tyres League Cup too, reaching the final as they bid to win the trophy for a third successive season. That showpiece event against Manchester City takes place a week after Leicester’s visit to south-west London.

League matters have been slightly more difficult for the reigning WSL title-holders, however. Recovering well from an opening-day defeat to Arsenal, Chelsea have moved into second position, two points behind the Gunners with a game in hand after the pair's goalless draw last time out.

They may rue a shock 1-0 defeat suffered away at Reading in December and will want to avoid dropping any further points in the race to be crowned English champions.

In the dugout

Emma Hayes kisses the Vitality Women's FA Cup trophy after guiding Chelsea to their latest Wembley triumph in the competition.

Chelsea manager Emma Hayes has presided over a hugely successful period in the capital club’s history since arriving in August 2012, including winning five WSL titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups and the Community Shield.

The 44-year-old was awarded an MBE for services to football in 2016 and has collected the FA WSL Manager of the Year award at the end of the last two seasons, as well as guiding the Blues to the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final for the first time in 2020/21.

Ones to watch

Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr have become a near-unstoppable duo for the Blues in recent years.

There is international quality throughout Chelsea’s ranks, but Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby, a pair crucial to the Blues’ league title triumph last season, have once again been influential during 2021/22, including scoring all three goals in the 2021 FA Cup Final.

Australian international Kerr is the WSL’s top goalscorer this term, netting nine times and contributing three assists in 11 games, while England forward Kirby tops the league’s assists chart, laying on six goals for her team-mates, as well as scoring six of her own.

With world-record signing Pernille Harder often playing alongside the duo, there is always concern for opposition defences, especially with Lionesses striker Beth England also operating in attacking areas. Both have hit the net three times in the league this campaign.

Last time out

A brave fight from the Foxes ended in defeat on their previous trip to Chelsea.

A closely-fought WSL encounter between the sides at Kingsmeadow on 10 October, 2021 ended in a 2-0 victory for Chelsea courtesy of late goals from Pernille Harder and Fran Kirby, though the Foxes came away unfortunate not to take anything from the game.
