Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers believes his side's upturn in Premier League form can be rooted back to their defensive work – which enables the attackers to thrive in front of goal.

Eight goals in two games have propelled City to successive triumphs over Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur over recent weeks. It's alleviated anxiety and allowed Rodgers' men to go into Sunday's trip to Manchester United with confidence.

Ahead of that encounter at Old Trafford, the Foxes manager sat down with the media. Here's some of what he said.

A springboard to succeed – Defending forwards

Brazilian Tetê had added a new dimension to Leicester City's XI.

Although Leicester have also conceded three goals in their last two, there's been a heightened sturdiness to their play. Put under considerable pressure at Villa, they emerged with all three points, before largely nullifying Spurs on Filbert Way.

"It starts with the defending," Rodgers said, when asked to explain City's offensive improvements. "If you look at our last two performances, in particular the Tottenham one, it’s well documented that Spurs had a bad day, but a big part of that was down to how our team played.

"Firstly, defensively, we stopped a very, very dangerous team progressing the ball into the areas that they wanted to. From a defensive perspective, we were very good and that was the foundation to attack well.

"From the attacking perspective, we were really aggressive. We had good balance in the team and people were scoring from different areas of the field. We looked like ourselves and the last number of games have been really good."

Kelechi Iheanacho is on one of those runs for the Foxes, netting in his last three matches in all competitions. With the Nigeria international bang in form, Rodgers hopes he can continue to add the goals which City require.

"With Kelechi and his skillset, it’s just about the right players around him as well," he added. "Listen, he’s at a prime age with a lot of appearances in the Premier League now. It’s just how you set up the game.

"He’s always a threat, I see it every day in training. When his touch is good, he’s a top-class striker. He’s also worked very, very hard on his game, pressing and winning the ball back for us.

"His hold-up play has been good and, at the top end of the pitch, he's looked a real threat and he always is. I’m delighted for him and how well he’s been playing. It’s just the consistency now to keep it going."

The addition of Tetê has also added an extra dimension for City in attack. Along with the arrivals of defenders Victor Kristiansen and Harry Souttar, Rodgers believes his side now possesses an increased sense of balance.

"We won’t score four in every game, but I think the balance in the team is good," he said. "We’ve got players playing in the positions they want to play in. We’ve got aggression and leadership from behind, with Victor and Harry coming in.

"They’ve showed their qualities in this early stage and, of course, having natural width with a winger that can stand up to one-v-one situations and secure the ball for you, that means you can attack with better balance.

"That, along with the confidence of the players, and the work we’ve been putting in… we’ve been working hard all year, but I always said that the team needed freshness, a new energy, and the three players who have come in have given us that.

"It’s also lifted everyone else because they then have to up their levels. It’s not rocket science, but the players are doing extremely well. They’ve been working really hard and they’re getting their rewards."

The Theatre of Dreams – Relishing the occasion

Brendan Rodgers is hoping to secure another win at Old Trafford as Foxes manager.

Rodgers pointed to Leicester's record away from home in 2022/23 – outlining why they can approach Sunday's clash with confidence. It's a match which falls in the middle of a four-game run which many considered a tall order for City.

Quizzed on the nature of the test Man Utd and then Arsenal (H) will pose, he replied: "The same question was asked two weeks ago, saying we had four big games and, for a manager, you’re only looking at the next game.

"Our performance away from home against Aston Villa was very, very good. It was a great result for us. We also beat Tottenham, who had won three games in a row, so both teams were doing really well.

"We’ve had some fantastic results and, performance-wise, we’ve been really good. Now, we’re onto our next challenge. It’s a team, again, who are in form. We know travelling in particular that we can go there and play without fear.

"The confidence is in the team. We’re the second highest goalscorers away from home in the league, so that shows you we can score and create goals. We’ll look to the next game to produce another good performance.

"It’s always a great arena to go and play in. I’ve won and I’ve lost there. It’s a great place to go and play. You know, to get a result there, you’ve got to be strong, defend well and be aggressive. It’s a great, big pitch to go and play football on, so once we do the dirty work, then we'll aim to showcase our qualities going forward and look to be aggressive in the game."

Admiration for ten Hag – Man Utd on the march

Erik ten Hag watches on during Thursday's 2-2 draw for Man Utd at Barcelona.

The Foxes manager says United are now starting to become real competitors once again in the Premier League, largely due to an array of arrivals at Old Trafford, as well as the work of manager Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff.

"I look at Manchester United and I see the introduction of new players coming in," Rodgers continued. "You can think of Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martínez – really outstanding players – and in Casemiro they’ve got a real world-class player who’s that confident player for them with experience and quality.

"He’s got everything. He’s always calm, and the quality of his game is a high level. That’s given the team something extra. Thankfully for us, he’s not playing, he’s suspended for the game. For the team’s perspective, he’s given them a real stabilising effect. With Erik and his coaching team, how they’ve been able to coach the players, there’s a good organisation there.

"They have a collective group of outstanding players as well, so they’ve done really well. They’re up there competing. They obviously played (drawing 2-2 at Barcelona in the UEFA Europa League Thursday night) in a really good game. Their record at home shows you they’re a difficult team to play against."
