Leicester City’s League Cup tie against Liverpool next Wednesday will be the 122nd competitive fixture between the two clubs since they first met in November 1895 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield in front of an estimated crowd of 7,000.
On 30 July, 2023, the clubs met again in a pre-season friendly match at the National Stadium in Singapore. The Merseyside club marked the occasion by presenting Leicester City with this cut glass memento.
Engraved into the glass is the Liverpool crest. The famous liver bird is in its centre. The design at the top of the crest and the words of the club’s anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ reflect the design of the Shankly gates at Anfield, erected in memory of the legendary manager Bill Shankly.
The two flames symbolize the eternal flame at the Hillsborough Memorial in memory of those who died in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. 1892 is the date when Liverpool was founded.
The gift came in a box with a gold-coloured lining. The reverse side of the lid contains an image of the Shankly gates, alongside massed fans from the Kop and some famous players and managers from the past.
