Nigel Pearson hailed a ‘huge achievement’ after Leicester City secured the Sky Bet Championship title with two games to spare at the Reebok Stadium on Tuesday night.

In a fitting finale, Lloyd Dyer scored the sensational winner midway through the second half to seal the three points that saw the Foxes finally put a ‘C’ next to their name in the league table.

Pearson’s side have been at the top of the tree since Boxing Day and sealed promotion to the Premier League with six games to spare, but the manager immediately switched his focus to securing the title, which they have done with some swagger.

The players put in a truly dominant display against the Trotters to win 1-0, but afterwards the manager had praise not only for the players, but the staff, the owners and the Leicester City supporters.

He added: “There’s always a lot of work that goes into achieving success, and I’d like to pay tribute tonight to my staff for their role in creating what is a very good atmosphere for the players.

“It’s all about them (the players) really but there are a lot of people who make a significant contribution to how we work and the players do appreciate that.

“I’m delighted for our owners too. There have been periods here where there has been a lot of speculation, but they’ve just been calm and managed to deal with that situation and time is a wonderful commodity if you get it in football.

“I think tonight we’ve proven that we’re moving in the right direction as a Club. I’m delighted for the owners and the staff at the Club for their contributions, and of course for our fans.

“Ten years out of the top-flight is a long time. If we’d have gone up in the play-offs last year, I’d have been delighted, but it wasn’t to be and we’ve been able to, for the most part, enjoy a title winning season.

“It’s never an easy road. You’re going to have spells where things have to be managed, that includes expectations and little changes during the season, but we’ve been able to get over the line with two games to go as champions. That is a huge achievement.”

It certainly was a goal worthy of winning any title from Dyer, who is one of three survivors from City’s 2008/09 League 1 winning side along with Andy King and Conrad Logan.

The manager certainly agreed. He added: “I’m not sure Lloyd will score another right-footed strike like that, but what a way to win it!

“We’ve had an unbelievable amount of chances tonight and we played some great football. It was a little bit self-indulgent at times as we tried to walk it into the net, but the players are confident.

“I can’t complain, because 29 wins in a league campaign with two left to play, it's a bit special I think.

“We’re champions now and it’s nice to have done that ourselves tonight. It would have been nice to do it in a home game, but we’ve had a fabulous following on the road all season and the fans that were here tonight will enjoy the experience.”
