The Foxes travel to Old Trafford riding a wave of pre-season optimism ahead of an exciting curtain-raiser against José Mourinho’s title contenders on Friday evening (8pm BST kick-off).
On the back of a productive schedule of friendly fixtures, City will arrive in Manchester with a healthy supply of new signings, while a number of young players will also hope to feature.
As the pre-match discussion continues, Schmeichel says his colleagues must be brave during a clash which has all the ingredients to be a thrilling first act of the 2018/19 Premier League season.
He said: “We play a different style of football than we’ve done before. It’s all well and good doing it in training and friendly games, but doing it in the Premier League is a completely different kettle of fish.
“For us, it’s about having the confidence, belief and bravery to go out and play that way.”
Schmeichel, 31, shares the supporters’ enthusiasm - but insists that a considered approach will ultimately reap rewards for the Foxes, rather than looking too far ahead.
“I think it’s important not to get too hung up on expectations and what we want to achieve, we know what we want to achieve,” the Dane continued.
“First of all, we want to get to 40 points, that’s the most important thing for absolutely any Premier League team - getting to that as quickly as possible and you build on that.
“Seasons can throw up all types of things, we had a strange old season last season… lots of inconsistencies, lots of injuries.
“For me, the most important thing is getting to 40 points to start, then we can build from there.
“Obviously we want more than 40 points, but the most important thing is getting there as quickly as possible, because then you know [what] things are realistic for you.”
