- Puel believes his side had numerous chances to win the game

The Foxes had to come from behind on the south coast following Ryan Bertrand’s impressive opener after the break.

Demarai Gray replied four minutes later with a neat finish before Harry Maguire slammed home in injury time in front of the travelling Blue Army to win it for the Foxes.

“It’s a fantastic feeling at the end to win away in extra time and to see all this character and mentality in the team,” said the City boss.

“It’s fantastic and I hope we can continue this moment. I said to the players this team (Southampton) plays very well and they deserved another result against Everton. They have a new mentality and more strength in the team.

“We know their quality. It was important for us to resist and defend very well in the first half. It was difficult to find space and movement but we had three or four good chances.

“After the second half, we found more space and after the goal Southampton played deep and allowed us to start with the ball to make some good play. We had a lot of chances to win this game.”

Maguire’s late winner sent the away end into ecstasy, as the Foxes recorded their second win in three Premier League outings this term.

“It’s a good reward for Harry and the team but I think we deserved this result,” added Puel. “Just before he shot I said ‘give the ball, give the ball!’.

“He has a good shot. In training sessions, he works after. It was a good opportunity to shoot and in extra-time, the opponent cannot come back.”
