- Maddison believes the tight-knit nature from youth to senior level is crucial to England’s positivity

Since joining the Foxes in the summer from Norwich City, Maddison’s direct performances have provided a spark in the centre of attack.

With England Under-21s taking on the Netherlands at Carrow Road in an U21 European Championship qualifier, a chance to excel on the international stage presents itself to the Coventry-born no.10.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to pull on an England shirt,” Maddison said. “It’s the pinnacle of your career to play for your country.

“When I made my debut against Ukraine in November, it’s a feeling I’ll never forget, and (against the Netherlands) will be no different.

“When you’re growing up, you always want to play for England and I have felt honoured to be called up at every age group.”

It is the inclusive nature of England’s set up that Maddison believes has produced a thriving relationship throughout the different youth sides, right the way up to the first team.

“We’ve got a really good group here,” he continued. “There’s a really good togetherness around all the age groups at St. George’s Park.

“From the Under-17s to the seniors, we have coffee together there, and there is so much positivity round England at the moment.”

James Maddison

Recalling his initial England Under-21s debut last year, Maddison says he is now setting himself other goals to achieve while away with the young Lions.

He added: “I like to set myself short-term targets and for young lads coming through, being called up into the Under-21s is a big thing.

“When I got called up for the first time, I was honoured. I had to sit there for a minute and pinch myself.

“It’s a great feeling at any age group, I love coming away on international duty and playing for my country.”
