On their return to the Sky Bet Championship, the Hatters have so far defeated Barnsley and Huddersfield Town, but were recently beaten by Queens Park Rangers and Hull City.

As they prepare to welcome the Foxes to Kenilworth Road in a competitive fixture for the first time since 2006, Simmonds believes Luton will be intent on delivering an assured performance.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's third round tie in the Carabao Cup, he told LCFC.com: "They started the season really well, picking up some vital wins on the board back-to-back against Barnsley and Huddersfield.

"They played pretty well in their first six matches, but they’ve been a little bit off it in their last two games against QPR and Hull at the weekend and their defending has let them down a little bit.

Justin's Excitement For Luton Return

Leicester City's former Luton Town full-back James Justin looks ahead to an 'emotional' return to Kenilworth Road in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

"They go into this game on a little bit of a downer after those two performances, but all in all it’s been a relatively promising start so far.

"Luton will obviously be trying to cause an upset and they want to go through. They’ll want to put on a performance, but will also be realistic with the class Leicester have in their squad.

"They’ll be looking at it in terms of themselves and how good a performance they can put on for the supporters, especially after the weekend."

Simmonds also believes Luton's supporters will be excited by the prospect of a reunion with defender James Justin, who left Kenilworth Road for Leicester in the summer.

Justin departed the club following the 2018/19 campaign, and Simmons says he will be receive a warm reception in Bedfordshire.

"It’s going to be a great occasion for him because he left at the start of the summer, so before there were any friendlies and there was no chance to say goodbye," he continued.

"It wasn’t definite that he was going to leave at the end of last season so it’s going to be a great game for him to come back.

"Hopefully he can start the game and then go off at about 85 minutes so the fans can really show him their appreciation because he was massively popular down here.

"He is from the area, he played for Luton since 2005, played through all the age groups, and he was a really good player for the club. The fans loved him.

James Justin spent 14 years at Luton Town, emerging through the youth ranks into the first team.

"It’s come around so early in the season that he can actually come and say goodbye to the supporters."

Assessing who could cause City the most problems, meanwhile, Simmonds believes it hinges on the side selected by Graeme Jones, who has previously elected the make changes in the Carabao Cup.

"It all depends on who they pick because, in the cup games, they’ve tended the change around 10 or 11 players in the matches so far," Simmons added.

"If they go with the league team, it would be someone like James Collins, who is obviously scoring the goals at the moment.

"If they change it, someone like George Moncur, who has come off the bench in league games, has been very tricky for teams to deal with."
