Chilwell: We Wanted To Show We’re A Top Team

A special, record-breaking victory over the Saints began with Chilwell’s opener, before Youri Tielemans made it 2-0, Ayoze Pérez struck twice and Jamie Vardy found the net to put the visitors 5-0 up at the break.
Pérez and Vardy both secured hat-tricks after the interval, and James Maddison scored a fine free-kick as Brendan Rodgers’ men surged to one of the most memorable triumphs in the history of the Football Club.
“We’ve come into the game confident obviously as we are at the moment, but no one really expected that,” Chilwell reflected to LCFC TV.

“As the game has gone on and progressed the team mentality was to keep going and not to just sit back and be happy with three or four.
“When we came in at half-time we wanted to progress and keep scoring more goals and show that we are a top team.”
Chilwell scored once, set up two goals and helped his boyhood club to a clean sheet at St. Mary’s Stadium, and was delighted to see Pérez and Vardy score trebles on the south cost.
The England left-back continued: “I get a lot of stick for not scoring so many goals especially off the gaffer, so it was nice to get a goal. I’m very happy to chip in for the team tonight.
“Obviously, it’s nice to get a goal but at the end of the day there are two boys (Ayoze Pérez and Jamie Vardy) that have got hat-tricks tonight and we’ve got a clean sheet, so it was a great night for the team in general.”
Chilwell says the Foxes will savour the victory, which he believes can be used as a yardstick for his side’s progression this term.
“I think if you look at last season, we played against teams with 10-men, we really struggled at times and dropped points when we should have been doing what we’ve done tonight,” Chilwell added.
“And then tonight it was a similar sort of thing to the Newcastle game, we’ve showed how much we’ve come on in 12 months and to score nine goals away from home is something that won’t happen many times in your career, if ever again, so we’re going to enjoy it tonight.”
