Not only did City create Premier League history, they smashed Club records of their own during a breath-taking triumph on the south coast.
Joint-largest Premier League win
A 24-year-old record set by Manchester United in March 1995 was equalled by Leicester City, thanks to Jamie Vardy’s injury-time penalty. The striker revealed after the game that ex-Red Devils defender Jonny Evans was encouraging his team-mates to go on and surpass his former side’s 9-0 victory against Ipswich Town.
Biggest-ever Premier League away win
No top-flight team has ever won by a bigger margin away from home in the entire 131-year history of the Football League than Leicester City did on the south coast. In February 1999, Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 8-1 at the City Ground, with substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjær famously scoring four goals in 10 minutes.
Club-record Premier League win
Having already set a new Club record for their biggest-ever Premier League triumph against Newcastle United, beating them 5-0 at King Power Stadium last month. However, they were already 5-0 up at the break on Friday, and four more goals in the second period resulted in an iconic victory for the Foxes.
A double treble
Brendan Rodgers won back-to-back trebles during his time as manager Celtic, but he witnessed a different kind of double treble on Friday, when Ayoze Pérez and Jamie Vardy both scored hat-tricks against the Saints. It was only the second time in the history of the Premier League that two players have scored a hat-trick in the same game, with Jermaine Pennant and Robert Pires each netting three times in a 6-1 win over Southampton in May 2003.
Double hat-trick no.4 for City
It is the fourth double hat-trick in City’s history, meanwhile, with Fred Shinton and Dave Walker (9-1 vs. Gainsborough Trinity in 1909), Arthur Chandler and Ernie Hine (10-0 vs. Portsmouth in 1928), Steve Lynex and Gary Lineker (6-0 vs. Carlisle United in 1982) also completing the feat.
Five up at the break
A brace from Ayoze Pérez, strikes from Ben Chilwell and Youri Tielemans and a header from Jamie Vardy put City five goals to the good with only 45 minutes on the clock. It was only the second time the Premier League has seen a side head into the interval 5-0 up, with Manchester City doing so against Burnley in April 2010.
7,007 league goals
The Foxes took their Football League and Premier League goalscoring tally to 7,007 with the victory, and it was Belgium international Youri Tielemans who bagged the 7,000th in Leicester’s history. After 4,680 Football League and Premier League games, City’s overall goal difference stands at 7,007 scored and 7,004 conceded – the first time they have had a positive goal difference since September 2016.
