City’s winning sequence began back in mid-October, when a success against Burnley triggered an emphatic run of form to propel Rodgers’ side up to second in the Premier League standings after 16 games.

Setting a new Club record with another victory on Sunday at Villa Park, manager Rodgers heaped praise on his stars for the way they went about their business in Birmingham.

“It feels great,” Rodgers told LCFC TV. “It was a real historical performance by the team and to play that well to mark that was obviously very, very pleasing.

“I thought we were outstanding from the first whistle. We could have had more goals if we were a bit cleaner on the passing and obviously Tom [Heaton] made some great saves in goal. Overall, it was a brilliant team performance and a great win for us.

“We scored four different types of goals. Of the four goals, we had two counter-attacks and the second one, we had a long period with the ball and obviously one from a set-play, so it was an outstanding win.”

While Jamie Vardy scored twice and Kelechi Iheanacho found the back of the net, Rodgers was thrilled with the execution of Jonny Evans’ header just after the break, and credited assistant manager Chris Davies for his input.

I felt in the first half, we’d still played really well, and it was just a case of keeping going. I thought we did that.

“Chris does our attacking set-plays, so he looks in detail at those and is always creative and inventive with those,” he continued.

“That was one that he’d looked at in terms of trying to get Jonny free out at the back and, of course, he made a great header and it was a very good goal, especially early on in the second half.

“We conceded just before half-time from a second-phase corner, which disappointed us. However, I felt in the first half, we’d still played really well, and it was just a case of keeping going. I thought we did that.”
