Plenty To Work On, Says Morgan

Jonathan Morgan has called for a quick response after LCFC Women's 4-1 defeat to London City Lionesses on Sunday afternoon.
More on this story...

- LCFC Women were beaten 4-1 by London City Lionesses in the FA Women's Championship on Sunday
- Paige Bayle-Gayle gave City a first-half lead before the hosts turned the game around
- Manager Jonathan Morgan was disappointed with the Foxes' display when speaking to LCFC TV after full-time
- He also praised the opposition for their performance, which included goals from Atlanta Primus (2), Lily Agg and Ellie Mason

The Foxes had opened the scoring at Princes Park through Paige Bayle-Gayle's strike but the Lionesses hit back almost immediately via Atlanta Primus.

Primus scored again just after half-time as the Lionesses made City pay for some slack defending in the second 45 minutes, when Lily Agg and Ellie Mason also netted.

Speaking to LCFC TV after the game, Morgan reflected on what he thought was a below par performance from the team.

"Just simply we weren't good enough today, for whatever reason we didn't turn up," he admitted. "I think London City did really well, they played counter attacking football and it worked very well against us.

City took the lead at Princes Park when Paige Bailey-Gayle fired home on 23 minutes.

"But in all honesty, three of the four goals were just long balls and poor defending on our behalf, not just the backline, but across the team to allow those scenarios to happen.

"I think one was direct from a dead ball, which isn't acceptable as we switched off. Obviously we'll go over the game footage and hopefully the girls will have a long sit down today to think about what they want out of this season. But hopefully we won't have another day like today."

Morgan felt the Foxes should have got a grip of the game after taking the lead, but also praised the opposition for how they managed to execute their game plan.

He continued: "All we had to do was control the game after that (the goal). I think London City frustrated us because they obviously were quite deep at times. We had to keep the ball and take the sting out of the game.

I keep saying to the girls that's one of things we have to get used to, that teams are going to come and really up their game against us. If we don't, we're going to fall foul to some disappointing losses and today's the first one but hopefully the last.

"We were frantic, we rushed things, we made bad decisions and as a result, when you do that, teams are going to keep knocking. They got a goal back within about 10 minutes and that was the problem.

"We should have seen it out until half-time and then it probably would have been a different second half, but we didn't manage to do that today. It's very, very disappointing.

"Personally, I think on another day we would have won. Take nothing away from London City, I think their final goal really showed the desire and the work-rate they wanted and they had for today.

"I keep saying to the girls that's one of things we have to get used to, that teams are going to come and really up their game against us. If we don't, we're going to fall foul to some disappointing losses and today's the first one but hopefully the last."

Morgan believes it is now all about how the players react to defeat, with a Continental Tyres League Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers coming up on Wednesday 4 November (7:45pm kick-off), before a return to league action against Lewes on Sunday 8 November (2pm kick-off).

LCFC Women are in league and cup action at Farley Way Stadium later this week.

"We've got Blackburn midweek and then Lewes next week," he added. "It's a massive game next weekend really, we just need to pick ourselves back up and go again.

"[In the] Conti Cup we'll probably make a few changes, but again, it's a game that we want to get a result out of so we can get ourselves back on track for Sunday.

"Definitely some fresh legs [with feature]. In all honesty, two weeks from the last game, the girls should have been fresh enough from that point of view.

"But it gives a few people the opportunity to show what they have and like I say, it's not a bad game to come into after the result we had today, so they will be trying to stake a claim for a place in the team."
