Jamie Vardy scored one penalty and saw another saved by Rui Patrício, while Kasper Schmeichel pulled off a stunning stop to deny Rúben Neves an equaliser with 13 minutes to play.
City’s sixth win in a row in all competitions moved them top of the Premier League table heading into the third international break of the season.
Vardy, meanwhile, now has eight Premier League goals in just seven matches, and 111 in 218 appearances in the top division overall.
