Matty James To Leave Leicester City

Leicester City will bid farewell to popular midfielder Matty James at the end of the season as his nine-year stay at the Football Club comes to an end.

- Long-serving midfielder Matty James leaves the Club after nine years
- The 29-year-old made 117 appearances for City
- He was pivotal in the Foxes Championship win in 2013/14

The 29-year-old joined the Foxes from Manchester United in May 2012 and went on to feature for them 117 times in all competitions, scoring five goals as the team lifted both the Championship and Premier League titles.

James made 30 appearances for the Foxes during his first season at the Club, scoring on his debut in a 4-0 win against Torquay United in the Carabao Cup.

City narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League in 2012/13, but successfully clinched the Championship title the following campaign, with James playing a pivotal role in midfield alongside Danny Drinkwater and Academy graduate Andy King.

During the Great Escape season in 2014/15, James featured for City 29 times in all competitions, and while injury meant he didn’t play for the Foxes during their title-winning campaign in 2015/16, he remained a key figure at the Football Club.

The talented midfielder returned to action in December 2016 in a 4-2 win over Manchester City, before heading to Barnsley for the remainder of the season for an impressive loan spell.

Injuries limited Matty’s playing time with the Foxes in recent seasons, but his determination and dedication to his rehabilitation were an inspiration ahead of his last appearance in a Foxes shirt against Manchester City in February 2020.

He started this season on loan at Barnsley once again, before joining Coventry City for the second half of the campaign. He featured 24 times for the Sky Blues in all competitions, scoring three goals and helped them to a 16th place finish in the Championship.

The Club would like to thank Matty for his fantastic contribution to the Football Club’s success over the past nine years and wish him the very best of luck in his next chapter his footballing career.
