Wes Morgan & Kasper Schmeichel lift the FA Cup

Leicester City's Season Review: May

The month of May in 2021 will forever be remembered for Leicester City's first-ever Emirates FA Cup success at Wembley Stadium.
More on this story...

It began, however, with the Premier League visit of Newcastle United to King Power Stadium and, despite heading into the clash with Steve Bruce's men unbeaten in four matches in all competitions, it turned into a frustrating evening for the Foxes.

First-half efforts from Joseph Willock and Paul Dummett put the Magpies on course for a surprise victory in the East Midlands and it got better for the visitors through a brace from Callum Wilson after the interval. Marc Albrighton and Kelechi Iheanacho struck late on, but it wasn't enough for City.

Next up, Leicester went in hunt of a first win at Old Trafford since 1998 on 11 May. Although developing a decent home record against Manchester United over recent seasons, the Foxes had been unable to repair their form in the North West against the 20-time champions of England.

That barren run finally came to an end, though, as Luke Thomas' superb maiden Premier League goal – a sweetly-struck early volley – and a bullet header from Çağlar Söyüncü confirmed a 2-1 success for Brendan Rodgers' men. Mason Greenwood registered for Man Utd on the scoresheet.

Goals: Manchester United 1 Leicester City 2

Luke Thomas' stunner and an emphatic header from Çağlar Söyüncü secured a big win for Leicester City at Old Trafford.

It was a result which meant City headed into the final of the FA Cup in buoyant mood on 15 May. Fifty-two years since their last appearance in the showpiece and the holders of a record for most finals without lifting the trophy, Leicester tackled eight-time winners Chelsea in the capital.

For the first time in over a year, a contingent of the Blue Army were in attendance for the encounter with Thomas Tuchel's men and a raucous atmosphere awaited the two sides when they emerged from the tunnel to be introduced to His Royal Highness The Duke Of Cambridge ahead of kick-off.

There was an early blow for the Foxes, too, as experienced centre-back Jonny Evans was forced to withdraw with an injury in the first half, but Rodgers reshuffled his pack and his side remained in the tie. The decisive moment would fall on the 63rd minute to Youri Tielemans.

Ayoze Pérez was able to win possession for Leicester, before Thomas offloaded it to Tielemans in the middle. Then, the Belgian ran at goal and, from around 25 yards out, unleashed a now-iconic strike past the onrushing Thiago Silva and into Kepa Arrizabalaga's top corner to make it 1-0 to City.

Tielemans Stunner Seals FA Cup Glory

Youri Tielemans' long-range wonderstrike helped Leicester City to lift the Emirates FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

Goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was called upon to make two sterling stops to deny former Fox Ben Chilwell and then Mason Mount in the latter moments before, with seconds to spare, VAR came to the rescue to deny the Blues a dramatic equaliser to take it to extra-time.

The full-time scenes were euphoric as the Club toasted its first success in the most prestigious domestic cup competition in the world – before Schmeichel invited Wes Morgan, a late substitute at Wembley, to join him in hoisting the famous trophy to the heavens.

Although the season ended with successive league defeats by Chelsea, with Iheanacho on the scoresheet, and Tottenham Hotspur, despite two Jamie Vardy penalties, the Blue Army will savour that FA Cup win for years to come, while Leicester ended the campaign in fifth place.

The Foxes will compete in the UEFA Europa League in 2021/22 and can now, finally, say they have won every major honour in England.
