Children Learn Importance Of Maths On World Maths Day

World Maths Day is being celebrated by Leicester City in the Community at King Power Stadium this week with 20 children from Launde Primary School.

Children from a local primary school joined Leicester City in the Community for the annual event, with Key Stage 2 pupils taking part in fun and engaging active maths challenges in the Community Hub on Filbert Way.

This included 'fizz and buzz' and 'throw' in multiples, games which test your times tables at speed, and target maths skills, which aims to get the pupils thinking about addition.

All of these Leicester City-linked games showcased how much maths is involved in day-to-day life. Begam Shabudin, a teaching assistant at Launde Primary School in Oadby, touched on the impact of bringing a lesson to King Power Stadium.

It will give them insight of what football’s all about, and how it can relate to the wider world and how it relates to maths. Maths is not just in the classroom; it can be outside of the classroom as well.

“The children enjoyed it thoroughly,” Begam said. “Some of them wouldn’t have had the opportunity to be in a stadium and it was absolutely amazing.

“I think it will give them insight of what football’s all about, and how it can relate to the wider world and how it relates to maths. Maths is not just in the classroom; it can be outside of the classroom as well.”

Maths falls under Leicester City in the Community’s Premier League Primary Stars programme - the 5,000/1 initiative is delivered at primary schools all across the region. This seven-week intervention, alongside events like World Maths Day, has helped children to improve their mathematical skills.

Miley, a Year 4 pupil at Launde, explained how the event inside the Community Hub helped develop her own learning.

Key Stage 2 pupils from Launde Primary School engaged in the session.

“The ball games helped me, as I’ve learned some of my times tables,” she explained. “When we were throwing the bean bags, it’s helped me with my division and counting up when we were trying to work out the answers.

“We’ve done a quiz that we get stickers for, and then at the end we get a prize for coming here and doing well in maths. We got to go outside and draw one half of the football pitch; it’s been a really fun day.”
