- Goodwin, 19, is one of several exciting young talents within the Foxes’ ranks
The England Under-19s international put pen to paper this week to remain with the Foxes for the upcoming campaign, following a productive introduction to life at Leicester.
Joining from fellow Barclays Women’s Super League side Aston Villa in January 2021, the 19-year-old assisted City’s ultimately successful quest to retain WSL status for a second season.
Now into her maiden pre-season at Belvoir Drive, Goodwin is gearing up to make even more of an impact in 2022/23, after featuring seven times across all competitions last term.
All smiles from Missy at Belvoir Drive.
Sitting down with LCFC TV inside the Club’s training base, the 19-year-old commented: “I’m very happy, really pleased. It’s really good to sign a new contract here and I can’t wait to get going again.
“Personally, I just want to get more exposure to this league and play against top players week in, week out. As a young player, minutes are really important, so hopefully I can impress on the training pitch and if I’m doing well, I can earn those minutes.”
Having come through a testing period during their top-flight debut, it will make the group, which has been bolstered by four new signings over the summer, stronger for the upcoming season, she believes.
Looking back on her first six months with the Club, the youngster reflected: “Obviously last season was a really tough season for us to get out of the relegation battle, but eventually we did it and it can only get better from here. We are just looking to climb the table as much as possible this year.
Goodwin’s New Deal Delight
Youngster Missy Goodwin reacts to LCFC TV after signing a contract extension at LCFC Women.
“Mentally it was really hard, but we all got through it, we’re still in this league, and we’ve got another chance to show everyone what we can do. I think as a team it will be to not put ourselves in the position that we were in last year and just show people that we’re really kicking on.”
Her Leicester City career began just a couple of months after Lydia Bedford took the reins and having worked together previously within England’s youth setup, Goodwin was thrilled to see the manager commit her own future to the Club too, given her track record of developing young players.
“At the start, coming in as a new player is always hard,” Redditch-born Goodwin added. “Especially that far into the season. But I think initially it was quite easy to settle in.
“And in training you’ve just got to put everything into it and then Lydia [Bedford] really recognises the things that happen out on the training pitch. I’m pleased for her. This Club really allows her to show what she can do and I’m really excited.”
