August: A Flying Start For The Foxes

Over the next 10 days, we're going to delve deeper into each calendar month that featured a 2023/24 campaign fixture for Leicester City.

The games have been played, the trophy has been lifted and Leicester's immediate return to the Premier League has been confirmed, but there were 53 games, in all competitions, that the Foxes had to endure on their way to success.

Looking back to where it all began, here is the first instalment of new series, analysing each working month for the Club, starting with the opening day of the Sky Bet Championship season all the way back in August of last year...

A first Championship fixture in a decade started with the visit of Leicester's Midlands' rivals Coventry City, who arrived to King Power Stadium on that early weekend in August, hoping to bounce back themselves from the previous season's disappointment, losing to Luton Town on penalties under the arch of Wembley Stadium in the Play-Off Final.

It was a slow start to the game for the Foxes, who went behind in the M69 derby to a Kyle McFadzean goal just after half-time, but the hosts' season was about to kick into action; a Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall double turned the scores and the season was off with a bang.

As if the Championship campaign wasn't long enough, City would also have to enter the EFL Cup in the early stages, meaning a trip to Pirelli Stadium to face Burton Albion in Round One followed next. A potential banana skin was well avoided as first half goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi ensured safe passage.

Mid-August saw the Foxes on their travels for the first time in league action, when they met Huddersfield Town, who would go on to be relegated from the division, at John Smith's Stadium. A dominant display, tallying up 69 per cent possession and 17 shots, was rewarded with a first goal for new signing Stephy Mavididi

The fixtures kept coming for the Foxes who carried on their winning streak with consecutive 2-1 victories over Cardiff City and Rotherham United. Academy graduate Wanya Marçal opened the scoring against the Bluebirds before Aaron Ramsey's equaliser just before the break. The late show was streaming again on Filbert Way as Cesare Casadei scored his first of three goals during a short loan spell with the Club.

The outcome was the same at AESSEAL Stadium when another academy star, in the form of Kasey McAteer, scored twice either side of a Fred Onyedinma strike to keep alight a electric start to the league. The month was rounded off with a convincing 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers in the second round of the League Cup; Ndidi and Jamie Vardy the goalscorers on Merseyside.

So far, so good.
