Leicester City 4 Tranmere Rovers 0

The best of Tuesday's Carabao Cup action and a first win of 2024/25 for Steve Cooper's Leicester City.

It required attacking prowess to break down a stubborn Tranmere backline, who defended well in the opening half but were unable to withstand the relentless Leicester pressure in the second period, while stunning Jordan Ayew and Harry Winks strikes put pay to any chance of a second round cup upset.

“It was a good night,” the winger reflected after full-time on Filbert Way. “It was an enjoyable game to get the goals and the performance that we put in as well. We got into the next round, so we're buzzing.

“It was quite similar to what we faced for the majority of last season. I like getting on the ball and showing what I can do and we had the same messages to be patient with the ball and when the chances come, you have to take them.

A Good Night, Says Mavididi

Goalscorer Stephy Mavididi reacts to helping Leicester City progress into the third round of the Carabao Cup.

“We showed our quality tonight and there's a lot of quality in the squad. The two goals were taken very well by Harry [Winks] and Jordan [Ayew]. It's always a bonus when you score. It's nice and a nice feeling to get a win as well.”

Very quickly moving focus back to the Premier League, the top-flight season recommences with the visit of Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, a very different proposition but one that the 26-year-old assured everyone will be ready for.

He added: “It’s the Premier League so we've just got to work hard now in the next coming days and prepare for Villa. That's all we want, for the KP to be rocking, so we’re looking forward to Saturday.”
