Leicester faced Manchester City on Wednesday, taking part in the first game in the inaugural Perth-based competition, and put the Barclays Women’s Super League heavyweights to the test.

Standing firm to end proceedings level with the Citizens, it took a penalty shootout for the Foxes to be denied entry into Sunday’s final, but Mace believes the team can take positives from their third pre-season friendly.

“I think we put in a good shift and worked hard as a team,” the midfielder stated. “Unfortunately, the only way to win the game was on penalties and it’s hard when you lose like that. I don’t think it’s very fair, because we put the work in.

We work together to get an end result, and we did that by getting a draw tonight.

“But it’s just another stepping stone in our progress for the start of the season. We had opportunities, and now it’s just about taking them, but we can only do so much and I’m proud of the team tonight.

“We’re working really well and the one thing about us is that we are a team, and we push each other. We work together to get an end result, and we did that by getting a draw tonight.”

Making the permanent move back to the East Midlands from Man City made the event at HBF Park a slightly strange one, but the young midfielder believes she has come back to somewhere she feels comfortable and forecasts a promising season ahead.

'A Good Performance'

Ruby Mace reflects on LCFC Women's penalty shootout loss to Manchester City at HBF Park.

Mace continued: “It’s weird (facing my old team) but I made the decision to come back to where I felt was home and I could get the best football out of myself. To come up against one of the best teams in the world, we did well.

“After today, it shows we can do it and we are at a good level and we just need to keep kicking on now, and we’re looking forward to the next game.

“To think we’ve even got fans this far from home is amazing and it’s like we’re bringing a part of home to us in Australia, and we love to have them here.”
