Mahrez Stars In Algeria Win
After scoring and assisting in the Foxes’ last outing against Burnley in the 2-2 draw at King Power Stadium earlier this month, the Fennecs wide man helped his side to a second win in just five days against the Flames.
Sofiane Feghouli gave the ball to Mahrez who slotted in with his right foot to make it 2-0 and supplied a superb cross for Islam Slimani who fired in the third.
Mahrez’s country now sits six points clear at the top of their group after winning all four of their opening qualifiers so far.
Algeria will face Ethiopia and Mali in mid-November and will hope to continue their perfect record in the competition.
Meanwhile, Jeffrey Schlupp was an unused substitute in Ghana’s 3-1 win over Guinea as his side registered their second qualifying win thanks to goals from Asamoah Gyan, Andre Ayew and Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu.
The Academy product’s nation will go into their clashes with Uganda and Togo next month unbeaten and sitting top of Group E with eight points from four games.
Development Squad centre-half Alie Sesay played his second game for Sierra Leone in another African Cup of Nations qualifier in Yaounde.
After helping his country keep a clean sheet in the goalless draw against Cameroon on Saturday, Sesay couldn’t prevent his side from losing 2-0 to the Indomitable Lions this time round.
The youngster played an hour before being substituted as goals from Leonard Kweuke and Stephane Mbia meant the Leone Stars cannot qualify from Group D for the tournament in Morocco next year.
The defender will hope to earn more caps for his nation when they play the Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo next month.
Another player to star at the international stage on Wednesday was Ben Chilwell.
The left back played 90 minutes for England Under-19s in their 4-2 win over Belgium in the European U19 Championship first qualifying round in Luxembourg.
And Chilwell, a full back who is as talented going forward as he is in defence, set up the Young Lions’ second goal after swinging in a deep cross for Bradley Fewster to nod in.
The result means Sean O’Driscoll’s men continue their perfect start to the competition, capping off another productive international break for City’s players.
