Wes Morgan gets up well

City Edged By Wolves at Molineux

Leicester City fell to a 1-0 pre-season friendly reverse to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
More on this story...

After a competitive opening, the match was settled by a stunning strike from Ivan Cavaleiro in the 59th minute ahead of the short trip to Burton Albion on Tuesday (7:45pm kick-off).

Craig Shakespeare named a strong line-up for the encounter with Nuno Espírito Santo’s Sky Bet Championship outfit as Kasper Schmeichel, Wes Morgan, Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy all returned.

During a lively start to proceedings, it was Wolves who went closest to opening the scoring in just the fourth minute. Diogo Jota, on loan from Atlético Madrid, stung Schmeichel’s gloves from distance as the hosts pushed City back.

Six minutes later, it was Leicester's turn to threaten with Danny Drinkwater placing a wonderful ball over the top to England team-mate Vardy in behind. The 30-year-old striker, however, was denied on the line by Conor Coady.

While Wolves were undoubtedly in the ascendency in the first half, Santo’s men were limited to long-range efforts rather than clear-cut opportunities.

That theme continued with Jota, Bright Enobakhare and Barry Douglas trying their luck from outside the penalty area.

Just before the break, Shakespeare was forced to deviate from his stratagem slightly when Islam Slimani suffered a nasty gash on his leg.

The Algerian would have to make way for Japan striker Shinji Okazaki. As a result, the Foxes shifted to 4-4-1-1 and it appeared to be working as they carried an increased attacking threat after the interval.

However, there was little that could be done to stop Cavaleiro’s strike from nestling the back of the net.

Jamie Vardy

City could have been 1-0 up inside the opening 10 minutes in the West Midlands, but for a last-ditch intervention on the line by Conor Coady to frustrate Jamie Vardy.

The visitors ultimately paid the price for that turn of misfortune but the fitness work done now will stand them in good stead going into the new 2017/18 Premier League season.

The two managers exchange pleasantries ahead of kick-off.

Against a side who are further into their pre-season schedule, it was always likely to be a challenging afternoon for the Foxes and that proved to be the case at Molineux Stadium.

One player who continued to hurry his man down and posed a threat up front was Marc Albrighton. The former Aston Villa man knows the West Midlands well and was an assured head in midfield.

City next face another Sky Bet Championship side in the form of Nigel Clough’s Burton Albion at Pirelli Stadium on Tuesday evening (7:45pm kick-off).

The following Friday, Borussia Mönchengladbach visit King Power Stadium for the Club’s final pre-season friendly of the summer.
