Despite often playing in a defensive role for the Foxes, the 20-year-old is now joint with George Thomas at the top of the goalscoring charts with seven strikes to his name.

Hughes added another goal to his tally against Spurs at Holmes Park on a night which saw him deputise for the suspended Hamza Choudhury in possession of the captain’s armband.

On his rich goalscoring form, he told LCFC TV: “I never thought I’d see the day! I don’t know what it is, I think things just fall to me. Someone must be up there helping me to get on the scoresheet every week.

Hughes: Confidence Sky High

Foxes youngster Sam Hughes spoke to LCFC TV after the under-23s' emphatic 6-1 victory over Tottenham on Wednesday evening...

“When I’m in the box for set-pieces or corners, I’ve just got to keep getting on the end of things and trying to put them in the back of the net.”

City’s youngsters are now unbeaten in 18 matches in all competitions, two points adrift of the Premier League 2 summit and they remain in strong contention in all cup competitions.

“It’s unbelievable at any standard,” Hughes added. “We’re on a very good run, the lads know the hardest thing is to keep it going consistently, week-in, week-out.

“It’s very, very difficult. When the confidence is as high as it is, we go into every single game thinking we can win.

“It’s strange because in the last few games, we’ve actually gone 1-0 behind. It shows the character from the lads to get themselves back into the game and get a result out of it.”

Hughes joined the Club from Chester in the summer and has quickly become one of the most valued members of the Under-23s squad, a side making headlines this term.

“Playing men’s football compared to here is different,” he revealed. “It can be difficult to adapt to, the lads are great and Beags [Steve Beaglehole] and Ben [Petty] have been spot on with me.

“I’m playing and I’m injury-free which is the main thing. I’m enjoying my football, whether that be at centre half or centre midfield. I’m having a good time, but we need to carry on.”
