Barclays FA Women’s Super League action resumes for LCFC Women as they begin March with an away trip to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon (12pm kick-off).

Looking to continue last month’s impressive league form, which included recording victories over Birmingham City and West Ham United, the Foxes will arrive at Leigh Sports Village in search of another three points.

Coming against Marc Skinner’s fourth-placed side will not be an easy task and, ahead of the weekend’s fixture, the third meeting between the teams this season, LCFC.com provides the key information you need to know…

The Foxes camp

A new recruit joined the Foxes this week.

Although suffering a heavy defeat away to Chelsea in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup Fifth Round last Saturday, February's WSL Manager of the Month, Lydia Bedford, was keen to focus on a positive start to the game by the visitors until Sophie Howard's sending off changed the complexion of the tie.

The Scotland international defender has since had her red card rescinded and is available for selection on the ground that she scored her first goal of the season in December. The squad was further boosted in midweek by the signing of New Zealand international defender CJ Bott

Following Everton’s 1-0 success over Aston Villa on Wednesday, the Toffees moved above Leicester in the league standings, though a third successive league win for the Foxes this weekend would see City climb back into 10th position.

The opposition

The Manchester club boast a strong home record this campaign.

Manchester United are maintaining a challenge for a top three spot, currently occupying fourth, two points behind Tottenham Hotspur. They are, however, on a run of four games without a win, were knocked out of the FA Cup by rivals Manchester City and also beaten by the Citizens in the WSL two weeks earlier.

A 1-1 draw at Arsenal would have been seen as a more positive result had they not led for the majority of the contest, while February started with defeat to Chelsea in the Continental Tyres League Cup Semi-Final.

Only one of those games took place at Leigh Sports Village, though, and they will be hoping to make home advantage count to get back on track in their quest to secure UEFA Women’s Champions League football for the first time in the club’s history.

In the dugout

Marc Skinner was appointed as Manchester United Women’s new head coach in July 2021, following the departure of Casey Stoney after three years at the helm.

The 38-year-old arrived following a two-year spell in the USA managing National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Orlando Pride. Skinner possesses previous English top-flight experience, too, having held the managerial post at Birmingham City from 2016 to 2019.

After successive fourth-place finishes in United’s first two WSL campaigns, Skinner is tasked with attempting to break into the upper echelons of the division.

Ones to watch

Ella Toone was on target in the last league meeting between Leicester and Man Utd.

No player has registered more WSL assists in 2021/22 than England international Ella Toone’s six, while the 22-year-old playmaker - United’s top scorer last season - has also scored five league goals so far this term, including a stunning strike against Leicester earlier this season.

Fresh from featuring alongside Toone in the Lionesses’ Arnold Clark Cup success over the latest international break, forward Alessia Russo is level with her team-mate on five WSL goals this campaign, while tricky winger Leah Galton has netted four times for the Red Devils.

Last time out

Sophie Howard's first Leicester City goal set the Foxes on their way in the first half.

City have triumphed on their last two visits to Leigh Sports Village, winning on penalties in the Continental Tyres League Cup group stage fixture in December, thanks to two shootout saves from Demi Lambourne.

The visitors twice led in normal time through Sophie Howard and Natasha Flint, while Alessia Russo and Katie Zelem equalised during the 2-2 draw in normal time.

The Foxes also recorded a 3-2 success over United in the Vitality Women's FA Cup Fifth Round in May 2021, when Shannon O'Brien, Hannah Cain and Flint all found the net.

United came out on top when the two sides met at King Power Stadium in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League in September, however.

Ella Toone and Maria Thorisdóttir put the Red Devils into a commanding lead before Abbie McManus’ goal halved the deficit. Martha Thomas’ strike then ensured the visitors emerged as 3-1 victors.
