The Leicester City centre-back started and played 90 minutes in a defence which also included former Foxes full-back Timothy Castagne, while ex-City midfielder Youri Tielemans was named on the bench by Domenico Tedesco and introduced in the second half.

The Foxes defender made a 16th appearance for his country.

The Red Devils were behind seven minutes in when Juraj Kucka set up Ivan Schranz to net an early opener in Frankfurt. That proved to be the only goal, with Belgium denied an equaliser by VAR.

Romania beat Ukraine 3-0 in the other opening Group E fixture, meaning that Belgium sit third in the pool ahead of their meeting with Romania on Saturday.

On Thursday, meanwhile, Jannik Vestergaard, Victor Kristiansen and Mads Hermansen could all make appearances for Denmark against England.
