City Held By Wolves On Filbert Way
Summer signing Ayoze Pérez was handed a Premier League debut by manager Brendan Rodgers, while Nigeria international midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was fit enough to start the encounter.
A hard-fought opening 30 minutes, Youri Tielemans had a shot blocked, Ricardo Pereira volleyed wide and Ndidi drilled off target on Filbert Way.
As both sides continued to defend resolutely, City’s best chance of the game fell to Vardy on 37 minutes. Tielemans sent a low cross into the box, but the No.9 couldn’t connect with a flick inside the six-yard box.
After the interval, Wolves tested stopper Kasper Schmeichel for the first time as Raúl Jiménez cut inside past the impressive Çağlar Söyüncü before seeing his effort saved at the front post.
Shortly after, Nuno Espírito Santo’s men thought they had taken the lead when Leander Dendoncker lashed home, only for the goal to be disallowed by VAR after a handball from Willy Boly in the build-up.
More good defending from Söyüncü followed, as he first covered well to halt the run of Jiménez through the middle before hammering the ball out of the stadium as Diogo Jota attempted to advance down the left wing.
A flurry of corners just after the hour mark for the hosts eventually led to a half-chance for debutant Pérez, who was just inches away from latching onto Söyüncü’s knock-down.
Both sides continued to press for an opener, with Jota having a shot blocked with 18 minutes to play, before substitute Marc Albrighton – introduced just moments earlier – chested the ball down and fired wide from range.
Fellow substitute Harvey Barnes also caused problems for the Wolves back line, as he forced Boly into good clearance following a neat one-two with Jamie Vardy.
Further attempts from James Maddison and Jonny Evans followed in the closing stages, but City and Wolves shared the points following a closely-fought encounter in Leicester.
Major moment
The newly-introduced video assistant referee (VAR) system was in use for the first time in a Premier League match at King Power Stadium on Sunday.
It proved decisive in the eventual outcome of the game, too, as Leander Dendoncker – international team-mate of Youri Tielemans – had his strike chalked off after Willy Boly handled the ball in the build-up to the goal.
Who impressed?
Gerry Taggart told LCFC Radio: "For me, the man who was trying to get Leicester on the front foot was Youri Tielemans. Jonny Evans, again, was pretty solid and I was impressed with Çağlar Söyüncü.
"At the end of the day, in a tight game, you’re looking for that player who can try and open the door and Youri Tielemans for me was that one player who was always trying to do that."
Where do we stand?
After the first gameweek of the season, Leicester City sit 11th in the Premier League standings and are one of six sides to register a draw on the opening day of the 2019/20 season.
