"It’s been a good start and we’re looking to build on that now," the Denmark shot-stopper said. "We want to stay in the hunt and put pressure on the teams around us.

"We had a fantastic winning run in the Premier League and we’re obviously delighted to progress in the cup too.

Looking ahead specifically to Boxing Day's encounter with the Reds, who hold a 10-point lead over City, Schmeichel explained why Rodgers' men approach it with confidence.

"They’ve hit a rich vein of form which has been unstoppable recently," he continued.

"It’s quite annoying sometimes to see them get those last minute winners but that’s testament to their character, mentality and persistence.

"That said, we always feel confident when we play at home and know we have the ability to beat anyone on our day.

"There are bigger challenges than others but we’re confident going into every game.

"I’m sure the fans are excited for this one so hopefully we can put on a good performance for them."
