This Week In History: Magic Moments From Collymore, Mahrez & Guðjónsson
Collymore's Hat-Trick Inspires Sunderland Triumph
Stan Collymore netted three times on his Filbert Street debut as Martin O'Neill's Leicester City sealed a 5-2 victory over Sunderland on 5 March, 2000.
Just a week following City's League Cup Final victory over Tranmere Rovers, Sunderland were the visitors to Filbert Street in the Premier League on 5 March, 2000.
New signing Stan Collymore had been cup-tied for that Wembley outing, but was back available for Martin O'Neill's men for the clash with the visiting Black Cats.
Leicester were two goals to the good by half-time with Collymore opening the scoring with a wonderful volley on his home debut before Emile Heskey also got in on the act.
Kevin Phillips got Sunderland back into it on 53 minutes, prompting Collymore and Leicester to restore their two-goal advantage, before Niall Quinn narrowed it again.
Heskey teed up Collymore to complete his hat-trick, meanwhile, in front of the old Double Decker Stand on 88 minutes before Stefan Oakes' free-kick wrapped up a vintage victory.
Title Bid Continues As City Seal Vital Watford Victory
Riyad Mahrez netted a brilliant winner for Leicester City in a 1-0 success over Watford at Vicarage Road on 5 March, 2016.
Sixteen years later, on 5 March, 2016, Leicester's extraordinary 2015/16 Premier League title charge gathered momentum with the first of four consecutive 1-0 victories at Watford.
With Tottenham Hotspur leading a continued pursuit of the Foxes at the summit, Claudio Ranieri's Leicester were under intense scrutiny as the campaign reached a tense conclusion.
Following a 2-2 home draw against West Bromwich Albion, City headed to Vicarage Road in need of three points to continue their unlikely bid to win the Football Club's first-ever top-tier title.
They were made to wait until the 56th minute to open the scoring, though, as Riyad Mahrez danced into the Hornets' penalty area before picking his spot into Heurelho Gomes' top corner.
"The title is not ours," Ranieri said at full-time. "At the end we can see what happens. I'm sorry, we know every team can win or lose so it has to be slowly slowly."
Guðjónsson's Halfway-Line Strike vs. Hull City
Joey Guðjónsson scored from the halfway line in a 3-2 victory for Leicester City over Hull City on 4 March, 2006.
Despite winning three games in a row under new manager Rob Kelly, another two draws had dented Leicester's progress ahead of the visit of Peter Taylor's Hull City on 4 March, 2006.
While Iain Hume scored a fine opener with the outside of his boot and a second effort of the day from Joey Guðjónsson was also admirable, City's Icelandic No.16 stole all the headlines on 64 minutes.
Leicester's second goal - and Guðjónsson's first - came in remarkable fashion as the former Aston Villa midfielder found the courage to try his luck from the halfway line on Filbert Way.
His audacious effort flew over goalkeeper Boaz Myhill and into the top corner, writing Guðjónsson's name into Foxes folklore in the process, while helping City kick-start another three-game winning run.
"I really went for it and it came off brilliantly, It was a brilliant goal!" Guðjónsson said recently in an interview with Club Historian John Hutchinson for Monday's edition of CITY Matchday Magazine.
