Morgan: We Can Be Proud Of Our Performance
- Jonathan Morgan reflects on LCFC Women's slender 2-1 defeat by Manchester City
- The Foxes were a match for their star-studded visitors at times during the FA Cup tie
- Morgan says there is a lot to be proud of in the nature of Leicester's performance
- He now wants the players to use this performance to push them on to further success
Chloe Kelly's penalty put the Citizens in front at Farley Way Stadium and Georgia Stanway doubled their lead, before Charlie Devlin's 78th-minute penalty for the Foxes.
Throughout the full 90 minutes in Quorn, Leicester competed with their illustrious visitors and, despite a few uncomfortable moments at the back, they were equal to Man City at times.
Reflecting on the quarter-final clash - rescheduled from March due to COVID-19 - Morgan told LCFC TV: "I think we did the Club proud. We showed what we can do.
"Man City are practically the England squad, so for us to compete with them for 90 minutes and to keep pushing them when they were 2-0 up, says a lot from our point of view.
"The resilience of the girls was brilliant, the attitude was fantastic and it’s something now which we’ve got to carry on with."
Morgan believes Man City should be praised for their game management in the latter moments, as Leicester pushed for a late equaliser, and says more finesse was required in attacking areas.
"They were starting to slow the game down," he added. "They managed the game very well during that period. The movement was good, but we didn’t quite execute some of the overloads we did create.
"For me, it’s the fact that we competed with them. It means that we’ve set another level for ourselves which we’ve got to keep aspiring to and we’ll just keep going."
Tierney Finds Many Positives In Man City Reverse
Full-back Sam Tierney speaks to LCFC TV following a narrow 2-1 loss to Manchester City for LCFC Women in the FA Cup Quarter-Finals.
The LCFC Women manager now hopes the players will use this performance as a marker for the rest of the season as attention returns to their FA Women's Championship campaign next weekend.
"I said to the girls afterwards that I love the fact we’re disappointed," Morgan continued. "That shows you how far we’ve come, to be disappointed to lose 2-1 to Man City.
"At the beginning of the season, if you’d said that, everyone would have taken it. They’ve brought in Alex Greenwood, Lucy Bronze… they’ve got a whole host of stars in their team.
"We’re disappointed, of course, because the goals we let in were below our standard, but other than that, they go home today knowing they’ve put a shift in today – not just as players, but as a squad."
