The young Foxes travel to Prenton Park for a last-16 encounter against the Sky Bet League 2 side, having already knocked out Salford City in the previous round - and are the only Under-21s team remaining in the competition.

With a quarter-final place up for grabs in their first competitive fixture since Christmas, Flynn admitted that the players are excited to get back out there.

"Everyone's looking forward to it, everyone is upbeat and positive," the 19-year-old told LCFC.com. "These are the types of games we want to play in, against senior teams.

I think all the lads have their attention turned to this game now. We haven't had a game for a while, but it's a great game to have as the first game back in the new year.

"These are the ones that everyone looks out for, even when the groups come out, straight away it's looking at who we have.

"It's nice that we're the last Under-21s team in the tournament, so it's definitely an incentive to try and go one further again.

"I think all the lads have their attention turned to this game now. We haven't had a game for a while, but it's a great game to have as the first game back in the New Year."

The Republic of Ireland youngster scored an equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Salford, lobbing the 'keeper from distance to take the second round clash to a penalty shootout, which Leicester won 6-5.

"I've got a bit of stick off the lads, saying I didn't mean it," he joked. "But it was one of those where it was just spur of the moment. I'd like to clarify for anyone that thinks I didn't mean it, I knew full well what I was doing!

"But on a serious note, it was a great performance lds. At one stage probably some people might have thought, at 2-0, we were down and out, it's gone, but we showed great resilience and determination to get ourselves back into it.

The goals from a dramatic EFL Trophy tie that saw the young Foxes progress past League 2 outfit Salford City.

"Even when we went behind again, we didn't let the heads drop, we kept going, we kept pushing and came through. In the penalty shootout, Jakub [Stolarczyk] made some great saves and the lads stood up and scored their penalties, so it was a great team effort during the 90 minutes and the shootout as well."

Flynn, who travelled with the first team for City's UEFA Europa League trip to Zorya Luhansk earlier this season, revealed that the team's intentions are clear, as they look to match last season's record of reaching the quarter-finals.

The full-back added: "No team is in this competition or any knockout competition and gets to this stage to just make up the numbers, we want to try and go as far as we can and if that is winning the tournament, then brilliant.

"We're not going there to just play a game, we're here to compete and we're going there to win.

"We're in it to win it, there's absolutely no doubt about that in anyone's minds, between the players and the staff as well, we definitely want to go out on Wednesday night and try and win and take it from there."
