Links With The Past: 1926/27 Leicester City Squad Cartoon
This cartoon of a City side from 95 years ago was loaned to us by fan and collector Jill Bocock. Dating from the first half of the 1926/27 season, it features some of the players who took the Club to the heights of finishing third in the First Division in 1928 and runners-up in 1929.
It also features two players who had distinguished careers at Liverpool - who visit King Power Stadium this weekend - before they signed for Leicester.
Veteran goalkeeper Kenny Campbell, a Scottish international, played for the Reds between 1911 and 1920, and was a member of their FA Cup side in 1914, when they lost 1-0 to Burnley in the final at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.
Kenny signed for City in November 1925, and was a regular for two seasons as the Club established itself in the top flight.
England international wing-half Jack Bamber, meanwhile, starred for Liverpool between 1915 and 1924. A regular in the two post-war seasons at Anfield, he also featured in the sides which became league champions in 1922 and 1923.
A team-mate at Liverpool was left-winger Harold Wadsworth, with whom he also played at Filbert Street following Wadsworth’s transfer to Leicester in 1924.
The only time Wadsworth was not a regular in the City side was in the first part of the 1926/27 season, when he temporarily lost his place to Billy Bell, who is featured in this cartoon instead of him.
Another of Bamber’s team-mates was Tom Bromilow, who managed Leicester City between 1939 and 1945.
