Goals from James Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes ultimately sealed the victory for the Foxes, who climbed to second in the Premier League, and the three ex-City defenders assessed the game in-depth at full-time...
Controversy & excitement
King Power Stadium
VAR was needed to confirm Leicester City's equaliser as Daniel Amartey was initially flagged for offside.
Steve Walsh said: “I don’t know where to start! That was very controversial and exciting. It had everything! Liverpool and Klopp will be worried about that performance. Let’s not take anything away from Leicester. They stuck to their tasks very, very well and came through with flying colours. I didn’t see that coming at all. We actually sat back a little bit in the second half, but when they scored, it shook Leicester up and they had a go. It shows what you can do to Liverpool when you have a good go at them.”
An incredible comeback
Daniel Amartey
James Maddison's free-kick flew past everyone and into Liverpool's net to make it 1-1.
Gerry Taggart said: “It was incredible. We were all a bit stunned watching it. The only real moment of class from Liverpool came between Firmino and Salah for their goal. It then looks like it’s going to be a real uphill struggle, but to be fair to Leicester, even though they were on the back foot for large periods of that game, they dug in there. With players like Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy in there, they’re always going to work hard for you and try to create and that’s what they did.”
Different attributes win games
Brendan Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers watches on from the sidelines as City beat Liverpool 3-1 at King Power Stadium.
Matt Elliott said: “I can’t remember a period of play like it, with that much pandemonium going on, that much incident, and everything that was occurring. I was rubbing my eyes thinking: ‘Am I imagining some of this?!’ I just gave up trying to work out what was going on! Chris, with me on commentary, perhaps he’s a little sharper-eyed than me, but it was so dramatic! The non-penalty and then the free-kick… Maddison then produces a free-kick when he needs to. But then that gets disallowed and you think it’s destined not to be Leicester’s game. Different attributes win games of football and it’s a great win.”
City overcome barriers
Jamie Vardy
Leicester had to come through behind to seal their victory over the Reds.
Steve Walsh said: “Yes, Liverpool made silly errors and there were some controversial incidents with VAR, all in the space of 10 minutes or so, but what a massive win. Leicester are seven points from Chelsea now. We’re looking forward to going to the Czech Republic on Thursday and it’s all happy days. They had to overcome a few barriers today. They didn’t play at their best, but we’ve come away with three points from a game Liverpool looked likely to win.”
Hats off to Brendan & the players
Brendan Rodgers
Brendan Rodgers acknowledges Jürgen Klopp at full-time on Filbert Way.
Gerry Taggart said: “When the goal was being checked by VAR after it was disallowed, I saw Brendan [Rodgers'] reaction, and I thought: ‘Surely they can’t overturn this?!’ But they did! That was the strangest part of the game for me. Leicester had the bit between their teeth. That really lifted them. Liverpool struggled after that, it took the wind out of their sails. Leicester just kept on going, they stuck to the game plan, and in the end, it worked for them, so hats off to Brendan and the players.”
Incidents lift Leicester
Harvey Barnes
Harvey Barnes wheels away after scoring City's third and final goal.
Matt Elliott said: “They hung in there. I don’t think Leicester were quite at it beforehand, but all the incidents lifted them up. All of a sudden, there was a proper air of positivity. They sensed it. They weren’t happy just to get a point from a losing position. That would have been a reasonable result, but they had a spring in their step and they seized the opportunity. Certainly, Liverpool were wounded and they couldn’t handle Leicester.”
