We Can Take A Lot From The Performance, Says O’Brien

Shannon O’Brien says LCFC Women’s performance against Brighton & Hove Albion was good enough to take something away from AMEX Stadium.

City arrived on the south coast without a point in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this season but came mightily close to claiming what would have been a morale-boosting result.

It wasn’t to be, however, as Albion won and scored a late free-kick courtesy of Maisie Symonds in the 93rd minute of the game, to earn a 1-0 victory and move the hosts into the top three in the WSL standings.

O’Brien, who played the first 69 minutes of the contest, said the team were left bitterly disappointed that their effort, graft and endeavour was not rewarded, coming away empty handed once more.

“We didn’t deserve it in the slightest, it was obvious we didn’t deserve that,” the 20-year-old commented post-match. “It was out of our control, it happens, but we’ve grafted for 90 minutes, and this just happens in football.

Our performances and getting better and better and it’s only a matter of time before we start picking up points.

“We can’t put anything against our own performance today. We were brilliant and we didn’t deserve it. It’s just a hard one to take, but we can’t do anything about it now, we’ve got to move on from it.”

Focusing on the positives, the former Coventry United attacker felt there were plenty of aspects that Leicester must now replicate in their upcoming fixtures in order to turn good performances into points on the board.

She continued: “We can take a lot from it. Everything from our performance today is positive. We can take everything as a positive. We didn’t put a foot wrong. They are third in the league on form, and they didn’t cause us any problems, we dealt with everything.

“They didn’t have a chance; they didn’t do anything to trouble us in the game. Even in possession, we were good, we were direct and could have even got a couple ourselves.

“We have to take a bit of context and when we step back away from the game in a couple of hours, we can think we pushed them right to the very end.”

Although City remain bottom of the WSL table, O’Brien believes the team have sent a message that they will not be a pushover for any side. They will now re-focus ahead of a busy seven days which involves fixtures against Durham in the Continental Tyres League Cup and then Everton in the WSL.

“I think everybody sees it,” the midfielder added. “I think teams know that just because we are bottom, we are not a walkover and a team that they can turn up and beat, because that’s not what happens.

“We take every team right to the end and you can see very clearly there is progress and we’re moving in the right direction. Our performances are getting better and better and it’s only a matter of time before we start picking up points.

“I don’t think we deserve to be where we are, based on our performances. We’ve just got to move on to the next game and hopefully get those points.”
