Pupils from Leicester City in the Community partner schools took part in an educational event to celebrate their differences for Rainbow Laces Day.

Taking place in the Community Hub at King Power Stadium, Premier League Primary Stars pupils from Sparkenhoe and Stokes Wood Primary Schools were joined by Premier League Inspires pupils from Castle Mead Academy.

The day centred around educating pupils on the definitions and meanings of LGBTQ+, and how being unique is important to society.

Pupils from Leicester City and Community Schools participated in the event

“I really enjoyed the workshop, especially the creative session in the afternoon with the younger children,” he said.

“I learnt a lot – there is much more meaning behind Rainbow Laces and LGBTQ+ than I first thought. When the primary school children were writing letters to Josh [Cavallo] about being the first known gay professional footballer, all the letters I read were really nice.”

Throughout the morning, primary school pupils took part in activities about celebrating their differences, whilst secondary school pupils were discussing allyship and how to be an LGBTQ+ ally.

Club mascot, Filbert Fox, made a surprise appearance and was on hand to help pupils identify similarities and differences between each other.

After a lunch break, Castle Mead Academy pupils each led a group of primary school pupils during a social action project about how they can raise awareness of allyship in their respective schools.

It’s been really fantastic – the Premier League Inspires participants have really taken on a sense of responsibility.

Glenn Short Primary Stars Coordinator at Leicester City in the Community

Glenn Short, Primary Stars Coordinator at Leicester City in the Community, discussed what the response was like from the day.

“The pupils have shown a lot of confidence in saying terminology around the Rainbow Laces campaign, and have felt comfortable in this environment to say those words,” he commented.

“It’s been really fantastic – the Premier League Inspires participants have really taken on a sense of responsibility. They really encouraged the primary school children to come out of their shells and explain what they have learnt.”
